ASSIGNMENT: 002

INTRODUCTION

Violence is defined by the World Health Organization as "the intentional use

of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or

against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of

resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, mal-development, or deprivation,"

although the group acknowledges that the inclusion of "the use of power" in its

definition expands on the conventional understanding of the word.

Globally, violence resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1.28 million people

in 2013 up from 1.13 million in 1990. Of the deaths in 2013, roughly 842,000 were

attributed to self-harm (suicide), 405,000 to interpersonal violence, and 31,000 to

collective violence (war) and legal intervention. In Africa, out of every 100,000

people, each year an estimated 60.9 die a violent death.

REASONS WHY YOUTH SHOULD SHUN VIOLENCE

1. DEATH: This is the major danger of being a violent. The probability of a violent

person being killed is high. Either through machete or gunshots, death is certain for

that person. The major aim of every violent group is to maintain supremacy and in

order to achieve that, killings must be involved.

2. LACK OF RELATIVE PEACE: As a result of the killings and fights between

various violent groups, it is impossible for any town experiencing that to have

relative peace. For example, in Omoku, during the clashes between various cult

groups spare headed by Don Wani who finally met his waterloo, it was impossible

for peace to reign. People were even packing out of the community both indigenes

and non-indigenes.

3. FEAR: Fear is the middle name of everyone who engages in a violent act. He

doesn’t sleep with both eyes closed. He doesn’t walk freely; he is always on the

lookout for dangers that may arise from his evil deeds. It becomes very difficult for

him/her to freely enjoy life with relative peace because of the fear of the unknown.

4. DESTRUCTION OF FUTURE: Violence is a future killer. There is no one that take

part in violence activities that won’t be finding himself in jail if he or she is lucky

to still be alive. That alone (being an ex-convict) will stop that person from

achieving a lot of things in future. Things like; contesting for an election, seeking

for employment, applying for international passport and visa. A whole lot of things

will evade a cultist in the future, that’s why it is a future killer.

5. GIVES FAMILY A BAD NAME: those who take part in different forms of violence

stand a chance of creating a bad name for the family. This stands a chance to ruin

the family integrity and can even prevent them from taking part or contesting for

some official or non-official position.

6. IT BRINGS LONELINESS: This mostly affects the girl friends of any violent person

e.g. a cultist. When people know that a girl is dating a deadly cultist nobody will

like to get close to the girl because of the fear of being killed. No cultist wants to

share his babe with another guy as a result of the authoritarian and supremacy

mindset that gingered them to join a cult in the first place. That’s why some cultist

has problems amongst themselves because of women i.e. the capon sleeping with a

junior member’s girl. It happens!
