Lesson # 3: Operations on Polynomials
Performance Objective:
Performance Objective #6: Given a calculator, students will simplify polynomials using
the distributive rule or FOIL and combining like terms correctly in 2 out of 3 questions
on a quiz.
Resources or Materials Needed:
Computer, projector, and Elmo
Simplifying Polynomials Scavenger Hunt (Exit Ticket)
(See instructional material page for all activities)
Time: 75 minutes
Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities:
Play YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKC74YKJpNY&t=280s from 2:43 to
4:38. After video, have students write a mathematical definition of Like Terms, then discuss the
definitions as a class.
Step 2: Content Presentation:
Instructor goes over the following examples of adding and subtracting polynomials:
1. (5𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 − 7) + (−3𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 − 8)
2. (−2𝑥 3 − 2𝑥 + 12) + (7𝑥 − 15)
3. (9𝑥 2 − 7𝑥 + 10) − (−𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 4)
4. (8𝑥 − 7) − (2𝑥 − 9) + (10𝑥 + 15)
Define the distribute property and FOIL method.
Instructor goes over the following examples of multiplying polynomials:
1. (3𝑥)(6𝑥 − 10)
2. (−𝑥 5 )(5𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 9)
3. (4𝑥 + 9)(2𝑥 − 1)
4. (5𝑥 2 − 2)(−𝑥 2 + 8)
5. (2𝑥 − 3)(𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 2)
Step 3: Learner Participation:
Simplifying Polynomials Scavenger Hunt – Problems will be placed around the room with QR
Codes answers. Students will be paired and can start with any problem around the room and
work each problem to find the next until they have completed all problems.
Step 4: Assessment:
Complete online quiz though homework software outside of class, quiz will contain problems
similar to the lecture. (See assessment page)
Step 5: Follow-Through Activities:
During the College Algebra course students will use the knowledge of simplifying polynomials
to solve expand and compress logarithmic expressions.
Lesson Plan Summary:
This lesson will focus on operations with polynomials including addition, subtraction,
and multiplying. The lesson will start off with students watching a portion of a YouTube video
that discuss like terms and as a class will define like terms in their own words. After that the
instructor will lead a lecture going over several examples of operations on polynomials. Finally,
students will work example problems by doing the polynomial scavenger hunt.
