Tutorial3 ME2200

This document provides information and questions about materials design and unit cells: 1) It describes a simple cubic unit cell with 8 atoms at the corners and an interstitial site in the center, and asks to calculate the radius of the interstitial site and discuss Frenkel defects in ionic ceramics. 2) It asks for the 4-index notation of vectors in HCP crystals and to draw planes corresponding to specific 4-index notations. 3) It asks to draw a zinc blende unit cell, determine the minimum and maximum cation to anion ratios based on coordination numbers, rationalize the cation to anion ratio in ZnS, and calculate the theoretical

MATERIALS AND DESIGN - ME2200

Tutorial 3
Date: 9 February 2018 Time: 4.50 pm to 5.40 pm
1. For the simple cubic unit cell shown in the figure 1 , there are eight identical atoms
with radius R at the corner of the cube, the side length of the cube is a. There is
one interstitial site at the center of the cube.

(a) Calculate the radius of the interstitial site. (1 Marks)

(b) In ionic ceramics, do Frenkel defects for anions exist in relatively large concen-
trations? Give reason. (1
Marks)
(c) Calculate the number of vacancies per cubic meter in copper at 270 C. The
energy for vacancy formation is 0.9eV /atom. Furthermore, the density and
atomic weight for Cu are 8.4g/cm and 63.5 g/mol, respectively. Boltzmann
constant=1.38 × 10−23 J/atom − K. (1 Marks)

2. Obtain the 4-index notation for the vectors in HCP crystals in the figure 2. (2
