Fourier Series & Transform Lab Guide

This document describes a lab experiment on analyzing time-domain signals in the frequency domain using Fourier series and transforms. The aims are to find the frequency content of signals using Fourier series, Fourier transform, and discrete Fourier transform. The document provides background on continuous-time Fourier series, continuous-time Fourier transform, and discrete-time Fourier transform. It then lists three tasks to be completed in MATLAB: 1) find the Fourier series of a periodic signal, 2) compute the Fourier transform of an exponential signal, and 3) compute the discrete Fourier transform of a finite sequence.

FOURIER SERIES AND FOURIER TRANSFORM OF SIGNALS

AIM
To find the frequency content in a time-domain signal using Fourier series and Fourier transform.

SOFTWARE USED:
MATLAB-symbolic variables
MATLAB-signals and systems tools box

PRELAB
Perform the following using MATLAB
1. Expand in complex exponential Fourier series the signal ( ) = , 0 ≤ ≤ 3 . Compute the
Fourier coefficients for −100 ≤ ≤ 100.
2. Compute the Fourier transform of the function ( ) =
3. Compute the Discrete-time Fourier transform of [ ] = 0.8 , 0 ≤ ≤ 20.

THEORY
Continuous-time Fourier series
Suppose that a signal ( ) is defined in the time interval [ , + ]. Then, ( ) is expressed in the
exponential Fourier series form as

( )=

Where Ω is the fundamental frequency.

The term is given by

Continuous–time Fourier Transform(CTFT)

The Fourier transform is the way to express in the frequency domain a signal that is given in the time
domain. It is the generalized concept that expresses in frequency domain, any signal defined in the time
domain for −∞ < < +∞.
Fourier transform of a continuous-time signal x(t) is given by

X(Ω) = ( ).

In order to return from frequency domain back to time domain the inverse Fourier transform is applied.
The inverse Fourier transform is of (Ω) is given by
1
( )= (Ω). Ω

Discrete–time Fourier Transform(DTFT)

Discrete-time Fourier transform (DTFT) is the counterpart transform to the continuous-time Fourier
transform (CTFT) when dealing with discrete-time signals, i.e., when dealing with signals described by a
function [ ].

(ii) The angle of (Ω)
(iii) The real part of (Ω)
(iv) The imaginary part of (Ω)
