EFFECT OF WEIGHT TRAINING ON SELECTED PHYSICAL
FITNESS VARIABLES AMONG COLLEGE LEVEL FOOT BALL
PLAYERS
WEIGHT TRAINING
Weight training is anti entirely different concept of training method that of
weight lifting. Weight is given to strengthen the muscles. Strength is built though
high resistance with less repetition weight lifting scarcely that will establish sports of
competitive lifting weight training is training for strength, speed, development and to
different sports using same way.
Frank,(1973) weight training is considered fastest and best method for
improving strength and endurance weight training should improve general physical,
strength training and endurance is builds through low resistance and high repetition.
Strength training and endurance cannot be substituted for each other. To develop the
strength, explosive power, and the best result it can be obtained by 60-80% of
maximum strength.
Current popular weight training dogma is based on training practices of
athletes, body builders, power lifter weight lifters of the past. Training information is
passed down from generation to generation. High school coaches often use
programmes from college coaches, who mimic programmes followed by professional
athletes. Notonly can professional athletes usually recover from greater volumes and
intensities of work, but they may often use cryogenic to recuperate. Without these
cryogenic aids, the programs of the past often lead to physical and physiological over
training synthetically many coaches athletes and other individuals incorporate
program philosophies in the 70’s and 80’s.
William,(1991) Weight training has become universally acknowledged as the
best means of increasing strength. But, present day sportsman and sports women
have not simply adopted the lifting schedules of the weight lifters and body builders’.
The reason for this is obvious not only are the requirements different; Each sport
different, each individual. Strength increase requirements in each sport different,
each individual. Strength increase requirements differ. That is why, coaches and
sportsman should plan individual schedules designed to improve strength in
particular. Muscle group where there is a weakness, as well as schedules to improve
the individual allowed strength. Weight training is a popular form of strength.
Exercise usually performed by individual who are mainly concerned to maintain or
enhance over all fitness and strength. Such programme consists of resistance exercise
for different body parts. Exercise mechanics, free weight or body weight bearing
exercise are used to produce resistance.
EFFECT OF WEIGHT TRAINING
Shaver,(1981) Effect of weight training on physiological variables is
considered is both scientific discipline and applied science. As a sub discipline of
physical education, it is concerned with the study of the cardiovascular, cardio
respiratory, neuromuscular and metabolic process and the effects of weight training
programmes of both maximal and sub-maximal levels bright about the changes on
various systems to human body.
PHYSICALFITNESS
Hein, Ryan (1960) conditioning the body through regular exercise enables the
individual to meet emergencies more effectively, of modern productive and
satisfactory life. “He is better able to cope with the exigencies of modern living is
more resistant to degenerative disease’’.
Once physical fitness is achieved, it is not maintained weight out a continuous
effort. Any level of fitness may be maintained with less effort than is required to
reach it. Regular vigorous activity at least 2-3 times a week is necessary: or the
maintenance of fitness. Many persons find it more enjoyable to continue a daily
programme of activity and can maintain their fitness with somewhat less intensity of
workman those who exercise intermittently.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The present study was designed to find out the Effect of Weight Training on
Selected Physical Fitness Variables among College Level Football Players.
HYPOTHESES
1. It was hypothesized that there would be significance differences was the
physical fitness variables among college level Football players due to Weight
training.
2. It was hypothesized that experimental group I was significantly improve the
selected physical fitness variables than the experimental group II and control
group among college level Football players.
DELIMITATIONS
1) This study was delimited to the college level of Selvam Institute, Namakkal.
2) 45 students were selected at random from that 15 subjects were served as control
group and other subjects served as experimental groups.
3) The subject’s age ranged from 18 to 25 years.
4) The duration of the training period was restricted to eight weeks and the number
of sessions per week was confined to three.
5) The subjects were divided at random into two groups of fifteen each (n=15).
Group-I underwent Endurance Training, Group-II underwent Strength Training
acted as control.
LIMITATIONS
The following limitations were considered while interpreting the results of the
study.
1) The previous experience of the subjects in the field of sports and games, which
might influence the training and data, was not considered.
2) Psychological factors, food habits, rest period, life style etc., could not be
controlled.
3) The weather conditions such as atmospheric temperature, humidity and
meteorological factors during testing and training periods were also not
considered.
4) Though the subjects were motivated verbally no attempt was made to
differentiate the motivation levels during the period of training and testing.
DEFINITIONS OF THE TERMS:
FLEXIBILITY
Flexibility is the range of motion around a joint. Good flexibility in the joints
can help prevent injuries through all stages of life (Johnson and nelson 1988).
MUSCULAR ENDURANCE
Muscular endurance is the ability of the muscle to continue to perform without
fatigue (Mathews, 1981).
MUSCULAR STRENGTH
Muscular strength is the ability of the muscle to exert force during an activity.
The key to making the muscles stronger is working them against resistance, whether
that is from weights or gravity.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This research may help the physical education teachers and professional
coaches to have adequate knowledge about the weight training to develop the
endurance and strength.
It helps to do research further with two or three individual training methods by
having more physical fitness parameters.
The study may help the coaches and physical education teachers to improve
the knowledge of sports training.
SELECTION OF SUBJECTS
To achieve the purpose of this study forty five subject were randomly selected
from Selvam group of institution during the academic year 2018 – 2019. The
subject’s age ranged was between 18-25 years only. They were randomly divided
into two equal groups. Experimental groups and control groups were considered. All
the subjects were healthy and physically fit. The nature and importance of this study
was explained to the subjects and subjects expressed their willingness to serve as
subjects in this study.
SELECTION OF THE VARIABLES
The research scholar reviewed the various scientific literatures pertaining to
the weight training on selected physical fitness variables from books, journals,
periodicals, magazines and research papers. Taking into consideration of feasibility
criteria, availability of instruments and the relevance of the variables of the present
study, the following variables were selected dependent variables.
DEPENDENT VARIABLES
Physical Fitness Variables
1. Flexibility
2. Muscular Endurance
3. Muscular Strength
STATISTICAL TECHNIQUE
The data were collected from the subjects were treated by analysis of
covariance was used to find out the pre, post and adjusted mean difference among the
treatment groups. If the test is significance the scheffe’s post hoc test was used to
find out the paired mean significances.
