Desalination of Seawater by Using Graphene Membrane: FYP Proposal

This proposal outlines a project to desalinate seawater using a graphene membrane. The objectives are to desalinate seawater and utilize graphene's remarkable properties. A literature review with over 15 research papers will be conducted. The methodology section will detail the design process, including safety evaluations and testing equipment. Work will be distributed among team members and tracked using a Gantt chart. Required chemicals, materials, and safety equipment will be outlined. The project aims to study results, compare to literature, and draw conclusions on utilizing graphene for desalination.

1 Introduction

1.1 Overview
Graphene is a one-atom-thick layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal
lattice. It is the building-block of Graphite (which is used, among others things,
in pencil tips), but graphene is a remarkable substance on its own - with a
multitude of astonishing properties which repeatedly earn it the title “wonder
material”.
This material shows amazing physical, mechanical, thermal and optical properties,
which have been highlighted in most areas of science and engineering. The sp2 bonds
and the involved electron configuration are the main reasons for the ultra-high
mechanical strength and elasticity, tunable electronic band gap, excellent thermal
(5300 WmK- 1) and electrical conductivity (2000 S cm- 1) and room-temperature
Hall effect of graphene.
Its hardness is over 30 times higher than that of diamond and 200 times higher than
that of steel.
