ASSIGNMENT

Q.1 Derive an expression for specific speed of a turbine. What are the ranges of specific speeds
for specific speeds for Pelton, Francis and Kaplan turbine?

Q.2 A Kaplan turbine working under a head of 20m develops 11772 kW shaft power. The outer
diameter of the runner is 3.5 m and hub diameter is 1.75 m. The guide blade angle at the extreme
edge of the runner is 35o. The hydraulic and overall efficiencies of the turbines are 88% & 84%.
If the velocity of whirl is zero at outlet. Determine: 1.Runner vane angles at inlet & outlet at the
extreme edge of the runner. 2.Speed of the turbine.

Q.3 Differentiate between: )impulse and reaction turbine ii) radial and axial flow turbine.

Q.4 What is a Draft tube? Explain its significance for use in turbine. Derive its formula for
calculation of its efficiency.
Q.5 Draw a schematic diagram of a Francis Turbine and explain its construction, working and
application.
Q.6 The hub diameter of a Kaplan turbine, working under a head of 12 m is 0.35 times the
diameter of runner. The turbine is running at 100 rpm. If the vane angle of extreme edge of the
runner at the outlet is 15 & flow ratio is 0.6, find: Diameter of the runner; Diameter of the boss;
Discharge through the runner. The velocity of whirl at outlet is given as zero.
Q.7 The penstock supplies water from a reservoir to the pelton wheel with a gross head of 500 m.
One third of the gross head is lost in friction in the penstock. The rate of flow of water through the
nozzle fitted at the end of the penstock is 2.0 m3/s. The angle of deflection of the jet is 165o.
Determine the power given by the water to the runner and also hydraulic efficiency of pelton
wheel. Take speed ratio = 0.45 & Cv = 1.0

Q.8 The following data is given for a Francis Turbine. Net head H = 60 m, Speed N = 700 rpm,
Shaft Power = 294.3 kW, Overall efficiency = 84%, Hydraulic efficiency = 93%, Flow ratio =
0.20, Breadth ratio = 0.1, Outer diameter of the runner = 2 x inner diameter of runner. The thickness
of vanes occupy 5% of circumferential area of the runner, velocity of flow is constant at inlet &
outlet and discharge is radial at outlet. Determine
1. Guide blade angle. 2. Runner vane angles at inlet & outlet.
3. Diameter of runner at inlet & outlet. 4. Width of wheel at inlet.
