Packed: Derivations

Packed columns have several relative advantages over plate columns including better mass transfer and ability to handle toxic or flammable liquids. The optimum size and shape of packing materials balances mass transfer and pressure drop. Height Equivalent to a Theoretical Plate (HETP) and Number of Transfer Units (NTU) describe packed column efficiency, and their relationship depends on operating and equilibrium conditions. HETP and Height of a Transfer Unit (HOG) are equal if operating and equilibrium lines are straight and parallel. HETP method can be used to calculate packed column height for distillation by determining HETP and number of plates from feed and product conditions.

 What are HETP and NTU? Derive the relationship between HETP and NTU for two
different conditions of operating and equilibrium lines. (Wankat 19.3)

 Show that the HETP and HOG of a packed column are same if the if the operating line
and equilibrium line for the system are strarght and parallel. (15)
