Exercise Lab

This document outlines an experiment to investigate the effects of exercise on breathing rate, pulse rate, and heart rate. Students will take measurements of these vital signs at rest and immediately after vigorous exercise, then at 2 minute intervals until the readings return to resting levels. The results will be recorded in tables and analyzed to understand how exercise impacts blood pressure, pulse rate, and breathing rate by placing demands on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Limitations of the experiment will also be discussed.

TITLE: Health and Disease

AIM: To investigate the effects of exercise on breathing rate, pulse rate and heart rate

APPARATUS/MATERIALS:

• Digital sphygmomanometer
• Stopwatch
• Student

METHOD:

1. Work in groups of at least 4 students.

2. One student should sit quietly for 2 minutes.

3. After the 2 minutes measure the student’s blood pressure, pulse rate and breathing rate.
(Measuring the parameters should not take longer than two minutes). Record the results
in a suitable table.

4. Repeat steps 1-3 until two more sets of readings have been taken.

5. Determine the average of each and record in the table.

6. The student should do sustained vigorous exercise for 4 minutes.

7. Immediately after the exercise record the blood pressure, pulse rate and breathing rate of
the student.

8. Record the blood pressure, pulse rate and breathing rate of the student at 2 minute
intervals until the readings are at or below the resting values.

DISCUSSION:

● Background information on blood pressure, pulse rate and breathing rate: definitions,
average values, factors which affect them.
● Posit possible explanations for increase in:
➢ Blood pressure
➢ Pulse rate
➢ Breathing rate

CONCLUSION:

LIMITATIONS: At least 1
