DATE EXPERIMENT : 2 MARCH 2018
LECTURER : DR. LEE TIEN TIEN
1.1 OBJECTIVE
Upon completion of this activity, students should be able to:
1. Practice the laboratory safety rules and regulation when working in the
laboratory.
2. Explain the function of safety equipment in the laboratory.
3. Explain the chemical signs on chemical bottles/containers.
1.2 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
ACTIVITY 1:
ACTIVITY 2:
1.3 RESULT
ACTIVITY 1:
Names of Safety Acids Function
To protect against dust that is useless against
Safety Mask
hazardous gases
To wash off acid burns and other spills of corrosive,
irritating or toxic chemicals on the skin or clothing. It
Safety Showers
is effective as a huge volume of water that is dumped
on a short period.
Fire Extinguisher Its purpose is only to put out fire
Fire Blanket Its purpose is to smoother a fire
Protect the hands while working with organic solvents
Gloves
that are absorbed through the skin
ACTIVITY 2:
Chemical Hazard Symbols Type Labels Function
Using harmful substances should
wear eye protection such as goggles
Harmful
and they should take care to wash
any spills off their skin immediately
Anyone using a highly flammable
substance should take care to keep it
Flammable
away from flames and sparks and
also from oxidising substances.
May cause burns to skin and
damage to eyes. May also corrode
Corrosive
metals. Avoid skin and eye contact
and do not breathe vapours.
Gives of a large amount of heat
Oxidising when it contacts with other
substances.
Indicates life threatening effects, in
some cases even after limited
Toxic
exposure. Any form ingestion and
skin contact should be avoided.
1.4 QUESTIONS
1. According to the dress code, what should you wear in the laboratory?
- Dress code that we should wear in the laboratory are lab coat, fully covered
shoes, chemical safety goggles, gloves, safety mask and long pants.
2. What type of goggles should you wear and when should you wear them?
- Chemical Safety Goggles. We should be worn all times while doing lab.
3. In what cases might you be asked to leave the laboratory?
- I might be asked to leave the laboratory if I fail to obey rules that may causes
injury to me and my colleagues, do not follow the eye-protection requirement,
violate the laboratory regulations and when there is an accident such as fire.
4. Can you wear contact lenses? Why?
- Cannot because the plastic used in contact lenses is permeable to some of the
vapours found in the laboratory. These vapours can be trapped behind the
lenses and can causes extensive irritation.
5. What should you do if:
a) You broke a beaker and cut your finger.
- Notify the laboratory director. Using the dustpan and broom dispose of in
broken glassware container. In the case of cut finger, staff member may escort
to the Student Health Centre for treatment.
b) Chemicals have splashed on your face.
- Notify the laboratory director. Rinse face with water source immediate to
prevent damage to the face.
c) The fire alarm sounds.
- Stop what you are doing and immediately exit the lab, go down the stairs and
exit the building. Wait outside for the instruction.
d) Your shirt has caught on fire.
- Use a wet towel to extinguish fire or the fire blanket
e) Chemicals have spilled on your pants.
- Took off the pants and in safety shower. Immediately flush area thoroughly
with cold water. Wash with mild detergent solution. If there is no visible burn,
wash out the area with warm water and soap.
