Tapping Torque Values PDF

This document provides tapping speed and torque requirements for various materials. It lists recommended tapping speeds in surface feet per minute (SFM) for different metals and plastics. It also includes a table with approximate torque requirements in inch-pounds for tapping various sizes of threads in different grades of steel, aluminum, and brass. The tapping speeds are general guidelines, and manufacturers should be consulted for high precision taps. Dull taps and different thread geometries may require higher torque levels than shown in the table.

All values in table above are in inch/Ibs. Approximate values based on sharp, 4 Flute coarse pitch hand taps at 65% thread height. Dull taps require approximately 50%
more torque. For 55% and 75% thread heights, multiply above values by .75 and 1.25 respectively. Torque values for helical flute taps are approximately 70% of those
shown. Torque values for chip drive taps are approximately 60% of those shown. Torque values for fine pitch threads are approximately 50% of those shown.
