This document proposes a 2nd grade science lesson using the website Bugscope to study insect life cycles. Students would first explore real or model bugs in class, then use Bugscope to observe different stages of a selected bug's life cycle. They would take notes and share their findings by posting on a classroom blog, commenting on peers' posts. The lesson addresses collaboration, student-centered learning, higher-order thinking, and publishing student work. It is rated at LoTi level 4 for technology integration and supports universal design for learning principles. The teacher would monitor students' online work to ensure internet safety.

Lesson Idea Name: BUGS

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade
Content Standard Addressed: S2L1. Students will investigate the life cycles of different living organisms

Technology Standard Addressed:

Digital Citizen
C. demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the rights and obligations of using and sharing
intellectual property.
Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
I will begin introducing all the different bugs and looking at their life cycle. I will either bring in real or face
examples for students to feel and explore. From this the students will use the website to explore the different
thing that happen to the bugs in the different stages of their life. They will choose one bug to focus on and
take notes about the different things they observed and learned.
After they find out information about their bug, they will post this information on our classroom blog. The
students will not only share their data but also an analysis of what they think they found. Students will be
required to leave one meaningful comment on one of their classmate’s posts.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Microscopes, magnifying glasses, real/fake bugs, and computers/tablets.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: through Bugscope the students send off the bugs, so they are getting mentors from outside the
classroom.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): student will create original data from their notes about
their bug.
c. Higher-order thinking: the students will analyze and take notes on their observation on the changes of
the bugs during different parts of their life.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Students will
be able to share their observations by posing them on our classroom blog.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
Engagement: Students are able to watch this video in a different language, read closed captions, or just listen
to the content without having to watch the video.
Representation: I will optimize access to tools and assistive tech by having students use iPads, desktops,
headphones, and other devices to help the student’s ability to understand content and watch the video.
Action and Expression: Students are able to play games, take quizzes, watch other videos related to this topic
and more to learn the content.
Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:
To ensure students safety I will monitor them as they navigate the sites. I can also have them use lockdown
browsers where students have to login to use computers so they cannot escape out of the website they are
assigned.
Reflective Practice:
I think that this is a fun way for students to get involved with their learning in a hands-on way. By having
students share their work on the blog it will help encourage them to do the best work as asked instead of not
putting in much effort.
