COMMUNICATIONS PROTOCOLS Refresh: HART
What is HART?
HART IS AN HYBRID MASTER/SLAVE COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL.
! HIGHWAY ADDRESSABLE REMOTE TRANSDUCER
! BASED ON BELL 202 FREQUENCY SHIFT KEY
! SUPERIMPOSED DIGITAL COMMUNICATION ON 4-
20MA ANALOG SIGNAL
+0.5mA

Signal 4-20mA

-0.5mA
1200Hz 2200 Hz
1 0

COMMUNICATIONS PROTOCOLS Refresh: HART
What is HART?

Master/Slave

! Master (HART Modem) requests information from Slave

(field device)
! FSK signal doesn’t disturb 4-20mA analog signal
! Digital signal is based on 0 and 1

HART i/O TT

COMMUNICATIONS PROTOCOLS Refresh: HART
What is HART?
2 Masters (Primary and Secondary)

! Up to two masters in the same channel

! No disruption
! Allows handheld terminals for maintenance

COMMUNICATIONS PROTOCOLS Refresh: HART
What is HART?
Point to Point, Multidrop, Burst Mode.

! Point to Point for process control

! Multidrop mainly for monitoring
! Burst mode for continuous PV transmission

HART is based on OSI model (7 Layers protocol)
Current HART Version is 5/6/7 (Includes WirelessHART)

HART Refresh
HART Specifications-Commands
HART Commands are divided in 4 major groups

GE © 2016. All rights reserved

HART 5 or 6 or 7
Hart 5:
is the 99% of installed base

Hart 6:
is mainly for system intergation

Hart 7:
is mainly for the wireless intergation

HART 6 and 7

Long TAG: Increase tag lenght form 8 to 32 characters

Locate Device: Flashes a messagge on device’s dysplay «0-0-0-0»

Digital Loop Check: Sets the analog and digital output. Used to check that even Hart
output valuse are outputting corretly and device is configuring

HART Software Lock: Prevents cofiguration changes by unautorized personell

Multi Variable Statuses Provides output quality information for all variables

HART 7
Wireless: Command for enable Wirless communication
Expand manufacutrer ID: Allows new manufacturers to register devices( the
number of manufactureres increase beyond initial estimantion)
Enhanced Multi- Variable Communication (8): Increase device output capability
from 4 variables to 8.
Time Stamp: Devices must have an internal clock. This allows a user to configure
the time between measurements for wireless devices
Trends: A device can store till 12 measurment points. Tracking the trends in the
device is benefical for wirless devices used in moniotr applications.
Syncronized Sampling: A wirless feture that enable multiple devices to measure at
a specific, syncornized time.

Go wireless

• Improve visibility to critical assets to

help you maintain overall health of
assets
– Device status
– Diagnostics
– Configuration
• Reduced overall maintenance and
expedited repair cost
• Cost effective alternative for
retrofitting wired instrumentation
• Wireless is a bridge for non-HART
DCS systems

Continuous and off-line diagnostics

Continuous Diagnostics: Off-line Diagnostics:

collects information while analyzes the valve
the device is in operation condition through a set of
and alerts the host or user tests executed while the
for further analysis if valve is not in operation.
deviation found. Usually requires valve
movement.

Examples: Examples:
• Travel Deviation • Ramp test
• Pressure too low • Valve Signature
• Temperature too high, etc. • Step test, etc.

Advanced Valve diagnostics
Valve signature enables predictive maintenance
•Friction
•Bench Range
•Response Open
•Response Closed
•Actuator Pressure
•Seating Analysis

•T86
•Hysteresis
