Quantum Physics: Bogoliubov Transformations

(1) Bogoliubov transformations are used to diagonalize the Hamiltonian for an antiferromagnet by introducing new quasiparticle operators. (2) Two conditions on the Bogoliubov coefficients uk and vk are needed to eliminate cross terms and fully diagonalize the Hamiltonian. (3) This leads to a dispersion relation for antiferromagnetic magnons (spin waves) with a linear dependence at low energies, in contrast to the quadratic dependence for ferromagnets. The magnons have a minimum energy at the edge of the magnetic Brillouin zone.
