SCITECS Problem Set Answers Physics

The document provides instructions for SCITECS Problem Set 1c and 2c. It states that the problem sets should be completed individually and submitted by the deadline of April 3, 2019 with a possible 5% deduction for late submissions by April 5. It also provides guidelines for how solutions should be written and stapled. The document then lists three physics problems for each problem set with the relevant equations and step-by-step solutions shown.

SCITECS Problem Set 1c

Presented Mar 17, 2019. Deadline is on Apr. 3, 2019: submission may be done in class or at the Physics
Dept letter box (7th Flr William Hall). Late submission until Apr 5, 2019: may get a 5% deduction.

Solutions should be written on yellow padpaper. Write on one side only. Sheets should be stapled upon
submission. Do not mix solutions to two different problems on the same paper unless the solutions are
short enough to fit one sheet completely.

The problem set is done individually, not in groups.

1. [9pts] A constant force of 20 N acts on a mass of (a) 4 kg, (b) 6 kg, and (c) 8 kg. What are the resulting
accelerations? [~Tippens]

F = ma
A=F/m  a = 20N/4kg  5N/kg
a = 20N/6kg  3.33N/kg
a = 20N/8kg  2.5N/kg

2. [8pts] A car traveling initially at 50 km/h accelerates at a rate of 4 m/s2 for 3 s. What is the final speed
in m/s? [~Tippens]

Vf = V0 + at

Vf = 50 km/h (1 hour=3600 seconds 1km=1000m So 50 km/h is 50000m in

3600 seconds which is 13.89m/s.) + 4 m/s2(3s)

 13.89 m/s + 12 m/s

Vf = 25.89 m/s

3. [8pts] A 0.6-kg wrench is dropped from a height of 10 m. What is its momentum just before it strikes
the floor? [~Tippens]
p = mv
p = .6kg(v^2 = 2 (9.8m/s (10m)))

p = .6kg (v = sqrt (196))

p = .6kg (14)

p = 8.4

SCITECS Problem Set 2c

Presented Mar 27, 2019. Deadline is on Apr. 3, 2019: submission at the Physics Dept letter box (7th Flr
William Hall). Late submission until Apr. 5, 2019: may get a 5% deduction.

Solutions should be written on yellow padpaper. Write on one side only. Sheets should be stapled upon
submission. Do not mix solutions to two different problems on the same paper unless the solutions are
short enough to fit one sheet completely.

The problem set is done individually, not in groups.

1. [9pts] A 300-Ω resistor and a 500-Ω resistor are connected parallel to a 9.00-V battery. What is the
equivalent resistance of the circuit? How much current is being drawn from the battery?

1/Rt = 1/R1 + 1/R2

 1/300 + 1/500
 0.0033 + 0.002
 1/.0053

1/Rt = 188.6792

V = IR

 I = V/R
 9.00/188.6792
 0.0477
2. [8pts] A piece of copper tubing is 8.00 m long at 25ºC. How much will it increase in length when
heated to 75ºC? (linear expansion coefficient of copper = 17 x 10^(-6) 1/Cº ) [~Tippens]

^L = L0a^T

 8(17 x 10^(-6))(25-75)
 8(0.000017)(50)
 0.0068

3. [8pts] Benzene has an index of refraction of 1.50. How fast will light travel through it?

n=cv
 V=n/c
 1.5/ 3x10^8
 200000000
