Understanding the Genitive Case

The Genitive Case is used to indicate possession or relationships. It involves adding an apostrophe and sometimes an extra s to the end of a noun. Some examples of its use include Bob's car, the students' favorite subject, and James's wife. When something belongs to multiple people, the apostrophe is added only to the last person named. The Genitive Case is also used with prepositional phrases like the color of your hair. Exercises are provided to practice forming Genitive Case constructions and to review future tense forms.

With singular nouns and names ending in s, an extra s is added:

She is James’ wife. That’s my boss’ house.

When there is more than one noun, only the last noun takes ‘ when one thing belongs to
both names:

When talking about things and places, it is common to use a phrase with a preposition:

I really like the color of your hair.
