THE SIMPLE PRESENT

We use the simple present for:


 Habits or routines
 I wake up at 7 o’clock
 He goes to the bed at 11 o’clock
 She practices piano two days a week

 Things that are always true


 Elephants live in Africa and Asia.
 Water boils at 100 degrees
 Human body has 206 bones

 Events and repeated actions


 We catch the bus every morning.
 It rains every afternoon in the hot season.
 They drive to Monaco every summer

 Instructions or indications
 Open the packet and pour the contents into hot water.
 Do your homework

 Scheduled events
 His mother arrives tomorrow.
 Our holiday starts on the 26th March

1. AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES
Subject + Infinitive+ complement

I, You, They,We Work Everyday

She, He, It Works Everyday


As a rule:

When the third person of the singular is spoken, => She ,He ,It

The final «s» of the infinitive verb is added

The "s" is added at the end of the verb. For example :

 I always walk a dog

 We work at the university.

 She sings very well. Sign- sings

 It rains a lot in winter Rains - rains

 He plays soccer Play - Plays

When the verbs that end in s, o, ss, sh, ch or x are added “es”. For
example

 Marìa watches his favorite television program. Wash - washes

 He kisses his girlfriend Kiss – Kisses

 My mother washes the dishes after lunch. Wash - washes

 Tom goes to Cancun by plane. Go – goes

 She fixes her car Fix – fixes

When the verb ends in “Y" and before there is a consonant, Change the y
for i and add “ies”. For example

Consonant + y = ies

 The bird flies very high Fly-flies

 She studies little on weekends Study-studies

 He carries the books in a briefcase Carry-carries

 The boy cries because his toy is broken. Cry-cries


If the verb ends in a vowel + y, then a “s” is added
vowel + y = s For example:

 She stays at home on Saturdays Stay-stays


 He enjoys his English class Enjoy-enjoys
 I study English on Mondays Study- study
 She plays soccer Play- plays

Frequency Adverbs

You can also use frequency adverbs, to say how often something happens.

Subject+ Frequency adverbs+infinitve+

Often A menudo
Hardly ever Casi nunca

Sometimes Aveces Never Nunca

For example:

 Mary and John usually eat out on Saturday.

 Lisa often arrives early

 He sometimes plays baseball

 She hardly never takes her car to school

 The radio never works well

 He occasionally visits me.


2. NEGATIVE SENTENCES

We need to use the auxiliaries do / does + the negative no and the verb in
infinitive.

Subject+don’t/doesn’t + infinitive+ complement

* IMPORTANT: with the auxiliary does not add “s” or “es” final to the verb.

For example

 I don’t speak several foreign languages.

 She doesn’t eat in the cafeteria every day.

 We don’t go to the movies every weekend.

 They don’t play tennis on Sundays

 He doesn’t enjoy his English class.

3. INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES

Wh question + Do/ Does + Subject +infinitive+ Complement

 * IMPORTANT: with the auxiliary does not add “s” or “es” final to the
verb.

Long answers

 When does Susan go to English class?


She goes on Monday and Wednesday

 How often do you wash your hair?


I wash my hair every day

 How many hours do you work in a day?


I work 8 hours a day
 Why do not we go to the party?
Because I do not have time

 Where do you live?


I live in Piura

Short answers

Yes/No + subject+ auxiliary do/does

 Do you like Italian food?. Yes, I do


 Does Susan work on weekends? No, she doesn´t.
 Do you work very hard? Yes, I do
 Does he read the newspaper every day? Yes, he does.
