Course Description: Summer reading will be required for this course. In this class, students will
read a wide variety of world literary and information texts; compose a variety of written texts
with a clear controlling idea, coherent organization, and sufficient detail; researching to locate a
range of relevant sources and present ideas and information; listening and speaking; using oral
and written conventions of the English language in speaking and writing; and continue building
vocabulary consistent with the ACT exam. In English II, students will engage in activities that
build on their prior knowledge and skills in order to strengthen their reading, writing, and oral
language skills. While English II is academically rigorous, each text allows for growth and
discussion of spiritual principles utilizing a Christian world view. Students should read and write
on a daily basis. Students in this class will be required to work independently outside of class on
reading and writing assignments.
Teaching Philosophy: The mission of my English class is to spark a love of learning in my
students through literature (classic and modern), poetry, plays, film, and writing. Learning in my
class will be a collaborative effort; everyone is expected to participate and contribute. Through
reading and writing, my students will discover who they are, who they admire, and how they can
engage the world in very real, meaningful ways, ultimately becoming both global citizens and
citizens of the kingdom of God. As students learn, they will develop an understanding and
application of the Lubbock Christian values of living out God’s word, living through God’s
spirit, being a light to others, and always striving for excellence, growing in wisdom, gaining
favor with both God and men. Most importantly, I pray my students will receive both knowledge
and wisdom, by learning to stand on the firm foundation of TRUTH that is Jesus Christ.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1
(NIV)
Incoming students are expected to have read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and James from
the Bible.
Outside Reading Novel:
ALL students are required to read one outside book each semester for freshmen English.
Students will collaborate with other students, write an essay, and be tested over this book. Mrs.
Walton will provide a list of preselected books that students will chose from. Students will have
to purchase this book on their own and read it outside of class time.
The student will need to have their OR book selected, approved by Mrs. Walton, and purchased
by August 23, 2019.
Grading and Late Work Policy:
This course has two types of grades: test and daily work. Test includes any exam and major
paper, and will be entered into the gradebook twice. Daily grades include everything else,
including participation, in-class work, quizzes, etc., and will be entered into the gradebook
once.
Students will have the number of days they were absent plus one to turn in late work. This
ONLY applies to absences due to illness or emergency. Students that are absent for a school
related event will be expected to receive their work ahead of time, and turn in to Mrs. Walton on
or before the deadline. Please check the absent binder for make-up work.
Any late work will have 10 points deducted for every school day that the assignment is late.
Assignments over a week late will not be accepted.
There will be a few extra credit opportunities given at teacher discretion.

Classroom Rules and Procedures:
1. Respect yourself and your future
Proverbs 1:7, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools
despise wisdom and instruction.”
Proverbs 3:13, “Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain
understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than
gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are
pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take
hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.”
2. Respect your fellow students and their right to learn
John 13:12-15, “When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes
and returned to his place. ‘Do you understand what I have done for you?’ he
asked them. ‘You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord’ and rightly so, for that is what I
am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher have washed your feet, you also should
wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have
done for you.”
John 13:34-35, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved
you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my
disciples, if you love one another.”
3. Respect your teacher
1 Peter 3:8-9, “Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one
another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with
insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called
so that you may inherit a blessing.”
4. Respect your school’s property and community
Titus 1:7-8, “Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless –
not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not
pursuing dishonest gain. Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is
good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined.”
2 Corinthians 9:6-7, “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap
sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you
should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
5. Cell phones
Phones should stay out of sight from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. If a phone is seen for
any reason, that phone will be confiscated.
Follow the policy laid out in the Student Handbook to see consequences.
Discipline Policy:
I require student respect for myself and other students in the classroom. I also require that
students come prepared with supplies and assignments complete daily. When student behavior or
preparation is lacking, the following procedures will be followed:
1st Offense – Student will be given a warning and will need to speak with Mrs. Walton
after class.
2nd Offense – Student will receive a referral, an email will go home to parents, and an
extra assignment that will fit the punishment at Ms. Morrison’s discretion.
