GROUP WORK AS WORK SHOP

INTRODUCTION:-

“Series of individual sessions which render first hand knowledge & practice”

Generally the workshop is a place where a group of people work together to produce
a new item or try to solve a problem in an old item. As one of the principle in education is,
Learning by doing, the workshop focuses on not only the knowledge aspect but along with
that it also deals with practical aspect of a learner. So in educational system, workshop is an
assembled group of persons who share a common interest. These people met together in order
to improve their individual skill and knowledge of a particular subject through intensive
study, research, practice or discussion.

We, the students of M.Sc. Nursing second year (16 in nos.) organized the workshop
on “Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness” from 17th April 2017 to
22nd April 2017 for 3rd year B.Sc. (N) (100 in nos.) The workshop was conducted at
Convention Hall, IBCS, SOA University, Bhubaneswar.

OBJECTIVES:-

Objectives of participants:-

At the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to:-

 Define the concepts, purposes, approaches and strategies of integrated management of


neonate and childhood illness.
 Identify the different measures for management of sick neonate and child illness.
 Develop the knowledge and skills for new approach for management and treatment of
sick neonate and child.
 Recognize different neonate and childhood illness and its management.
 Apply nursing process in identification, management and treatment of the neonatal
and childhood illness.
 Perform assessment & treatment of child and counseling and educating the family
members in their clinical settings.

Objectives of organizer:-

At the end of the workshop, the organizers will be able to:-

 Describe the concepts, purposes, principles, steps, advantages and limitations of


workshop.
 Develop an understanding and skills regarding the use of theme and problem.
 Identify the educational objectives and different teaching methods for conducting
workshop.
 Plan and conduct workshop on different issues of nursing by using various
instructional strategies.
 Evaluate the participants’ knowledge, skills and attitude towards workshop.
 Critically analyze the benefits and problems existing in workshop program.
 Develop skill in working as a group
 Develop leadership skill

COURSE CONTENTS: -

The areas covered during workshop were: -

 Introduction, purposes, principles, strategies and management process of Integrated


Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness.
 Assess, classify and identify treatment of sick young infant up to 2 months.
 Assess, classify and identify treatment of sick children age 2 months to 5 years.
 Referral process of IMNCI.
 Treatment and management of sick infant and children with different diseases.
 Counseling and follow up care.

Methodology: -

The participatory methodology had been used through the workshop. The methods
include:-

 Panel discussion
 Lecture cum discussion
 Seminar
 Demonstration
 Return demonstration
 Group activity (role play)

DIVISION OF PARTICIPANTS: -

The participants of workshop were the students of 3rd year B.Sc. nursing. They were
divided into two groups and each group contained 50 students.

COURSE DURATION: -

The workshop was organized for 6 days and 3 days for each group.

COURSE EVALUATION: -

The course had been evaluated by:-

 Pre test &post test questionnaire


 Reaction evaluation or feedback evaluation
 Daily group work report
 Return demonstration by observation checklist

ACTIVITIES DONE FOR CONDUCTION OF WORKSHOP:-


The workshop was organized on “Integrated Management of neonatal and childhood illness”
at Conventional Hall, IBCS for 3rd year B.Sc. (N) students from 17th April, 2017 to 22nd
April, 2017. The following activities were done during workshop:-

1. Preparatory phase:-
It is the first phase of workshop.
Firstly, we had discussed on organization of workshop with our class co-coordinator
Prof. Tapati Saha and selected the participants & four topics of workshop from
different subjects of 3rd year B.Sc. (N); among these we selected the topic/ area from
Child Health Nursing i.e. “Integrated Management of neonate and childhood
illness (IMNCI)”. Then, we discussed on the topic with Prof. Tapati Saha (class
coordinator & workshop coordinator) and Mrs. Geetarani Nayak (workshop
coordinator) on December, 2016.
After that, we formulated the general objectives of workshop and prepared the
blue print of workshop i.e. required articles/ materials, source of fund, place, date,
time, contents& checklist etc. We had formed different committees of workshop with
objectives and distributed the activities of committees. We had selected the date, time
& place for organizing the workshop i.e. 17th April to 22nd April 2017 from 8:00 am-
5:00 pm for workshop at Convention Hall, IBCS. We took the permission for
organize the workshop from the Dean of Sum Nursing College, Class coordinator of
3rd year B.Sc. (N) & subject coordinator of 1st year M.Sc. (N). Then, we made the
proposal for expected budget and got permission from the Dean. We arranged time to
time meetings for organizers and discussed on progress of work and also followed the
proposal and recorded all that activities.
We arranged three guest lecturers from Pediatric Department of IMS & SUM
Hospital, Bhubaneswar (Prof. Dr. Mamata Mohanty (HOD of Pediatric Dept.), Prof.
Dr. Mrutyunjay Dash and Prof. Dr. Dilip Kumar Das) and two moderators i.e. Mrs.
Rubi Pradhan (M.Sc. Tutor) & Ms. S Mohanty (Asst. Professor) from SUM Nursing
College and invited them for delivering their knowledge. We also invited to the
participants for attend the workshop and gave them notice.
Then, we requested the Dean for the provision of certificates and writing pads
from college. We arranged the educational handbooks, equipments, invitation cards,
posters, banners, charts, articles, certificates, files, pens and food materials etc. Then
we set the hall, prepared the sitting arrangements & Dias and tested the sound system.
After all that preparation, we invited the guests, Dean, Associate Dean, Faculties &
office staffs for inaugural session. We, all the organizers & workshop coordinators
were reviewed the physical arrangements before the workshop.

2. Implementation/ workshop phase:-


It is the second phase of workshop, which is actually implemented or done on the day
of workshop. It was held in two groups i.e. from 17th April to 19th April, 2017 for 1st
Batch and from 20th April to 22nd April, 2017 for 2nd Batch at Conventional Hall.
First day, we started the programme with registration from 8:30- 9:30 am and then
introductory session done for participants & organizers. Then, we continued the
program as per prepared schedule i.e. inaugural session, panel discussion, seminars,
role play, group discussions, demonstrations, re-demonstrations, tea breaks & lunch
breaks and valedictory session etc. The Resource persons, organizers & facilitators
shared their knowledge during different scientific sessions.
We distributed the study materials to the participants. We took immediate
evaluations, feedback and pre test & post test for the participants and at the end day,
we took the group photographs.
3. Evaluation phase:-
We had prepared the workshop report day by day and reported that at the
beginning of program. We also completed total workshop report and submitted
expenditure statement. We had taken immediate post tests for participants to know
their improvement.
4. Follow up phase:-
We took the immediate feedback by the participants regarding program &
organization and got their suggestions for areas for improvement.

CONCLUSION

As workshop is a place where people met together in order to improve their individual
skill and knowledge of a particular subject through intensive study, research, practice or
discussion, this educational workshop was helpful for the participants group where they
can share knowledge and practice skillfully. It was a platform for individual hands on
training program.

REPORT OF WORKSHOP

DAY-1

The workshop on IMNCI organized by the M.sc nursing students under the guidance of
faculty member of SUM Nursing College was started on 17th April, 2017 .

8:30 A.M the registration process began .Two Msc . Nursing 1st year students Miss
Truptimayee Das and Miss Mary PreetyBanra did it.The participants were provided a file
which contains feed backform ,pen, writing pad, schedule with objectives. Total 39
participants from 3rd year Bsc. Nursing were registered .

The inaugural session started at 9:50 A.M by the wel come address by Miss Jonaki
Biswas .The chief guest Prof.PravatiTripathy, Dean, SUM Nursing College
,Prof.TapatiSaha Additional Dean & one of the workshop co-ordinator arrived on the
Dias and were felicitated with flower bouquet by Msc, Nursing 1st year students.The
formal inauguration was done by lightening the lamps by all the dignitaries and the other
faculty members followed by SOA Anthem,

Prof.Tapati Saha( TeacherCoordinator for the workshop) unfolded the theme of the work
shop, i.e“EARLY DIAGNOSIS ,EARLY TREATMENT KEEPS THE CHILD
HEALTHY”and explained the objectives of the workshop .She also mentioned about the
major diseases covered under the IMNCI programme in her speech ,the chief guest
Prof.PravatiTripathy praised the organizer, the Msc Nursing 1st year group for organizing
the workshop on IMNCI which is relevant for the participant and very much
important.She discussed the history of IMNCI briefly .

Next speaker was Prof.Sasmita Das, Guest of Honour. She vividly explained the statistics
related to Infant and childhood

mortality and morbidity with different research study results. She also gave thanks to
the organizers for choosing an important topic for workshop. The inaugural session ended
with vote of thanks given by one of the student organizer.

After a short tea break ,the scientific session was started with the panel discussion on
assessment and classification of possible serious bacterial infection, diarrhoea and breast
feeding problems of 0-2 months sick young infants. Mrs. GeetaraniNayak HOD Paediatric
Nursing SUM Nursing College was the moderator and the panellists were SakuntalaGiri
,Mary PreetyBanra ,SanchariPanigrahi ,Srijita Panda and Jonaki Biswas from Msc. Nursing
1st year .In the panel, the assessment of the danger signs of the infant up to 2 months was
discussed with colour coding system of IMNCI strategy & it was effective in the interactive
session after the panel discussion.

After that the hands on training session was started with demonstration of breast
feeding technique and kangaroo mother care procedure by Eliza Rath , AparnnaMoharana ,
Ranjita Jena , Truptimayee Das and Monalisa Mall from the organizer. After that in the
group activity I session, students were divided in five groups and 30 minutes for each
procedure were provided to each group to practice the procedure individually under the
guidance of the student facilitator from organizer.

There was a lunch break of 45 minutes from 1:15 P.M to 2P.M.

Next from 2 -2.30 pm one/two members from each group return demonstrated the
procedure in front of the big group. The whole session demonstration practice & return
demonstration were conducted under the guidance of Mrs. Ruby Pradhan, lecturer

At 2:30 P.M Prof.Dr.Mamata Devi Mohanty ,HOD ,Paediatric department, IMS AND SUM
HOSPITAL provided a brief idea about assessment of PSBI ,diarrhoea and feeding problems
. After the assessment she elaborated the identification ,treatment and management of the
above stated condition with nice explanatory video & clear photographs of assessment
technique. The session ended at 3:30 P.M .After that the counselling of mothers on feeding
problems of their infants and home managements of diarrhoea was discussed through the role
play method by the organizers (SakuntalaGiri ,MissSanchariPanigrahi and Miss Srijita Panda.

After that 25minutes were given to the participants for the practice for the group
activity II emphasizing on counselling of mothers in different cases . This session was
guided by ms. Sailabala mohanty.asst. profThe group activity was resumed after a short tea
break . Then the participants from each of the five groups showed the counselling technique
through role play.The days activity was over by 5.40 pm .before leaving the participants were
informed about the programme of the 2nd day.

DAY -2

On the 2nd day, the workshop was started sharply at 08:45am, Ms Mousika Roy,
the representative from the participants presented the report of the previous day’s workshop.
Soon after that the scientific session started with the seminar presented by MSC (N) 1 st year
students (Eliza Rath, Monalisa Mall, Bharati Sahoo & Swetarani Dalei) on assessment &
classification of pneumonia and ear problem of 2 months to 5 years children. The further
clarifications of the participants were done by the experts during the interactive phase. This
was followed by a 15 minutes tea break.

The workshop was resumed with the re demonstration as group activity


(presentation session) to aid the understanding of participants in continuation of the previous
day’s hands on training session. In this session, the participants were evaluated.

After that another seminar was presented by the MSC (N) 1st year students (Ranjita
Jena, Ttruptimayee Das, Shradhanjali Biswal & Sasmita Prusty) on assessment &
classification of malnutrition for 2 months to 5 years of children. In the interactive phase ,
further discussion was carried out by the experts in order to ease the understanding of the
concepts. It was effective.

The seminar was followed by a hands on training session on demonstration of


MUAC (Mid upper Arm Circumference) measurement by the organizer group (Dinesh
Pattnayak & Ranjita Jena ).Then the group activities were carried out in two sessions i.e
practice & presentation session respectively by the participants. The students responded
effectively.

There was a lunch break of 45 minutes from 1.15pm to 2.00pm.

The afternoon session was started sharply at 2.00 pm with a lecture cum
discussion on identification treatment & management of pneumonia, ear problem &
malnutrition by Prof. Dr. Mrutyunjay Dash, Department of Pediatrics, IMS & SUM Hospital .
He elaborated some salient features of IMNCI strategies for case management & quick
referal . He also discussed the whole group by showing the videos and exercises. The
participants responded appropriately and effectively. He concluded the discussion by
emphasizing the effects of IMNCI as a broad platform for the health care providers to
implement it in grass root level.

After that the tea break was announced.

This was followed by a role play by the MSC (N) 1st year students (Nibedita
Rout, Sasmita Prusty, Truptimayee Das & Shradhanjali Biswal ) on counselling the mothers
on pneumonia & malnutrition. The 2nd day was ended at 5.00 pm by assigning the case
scenarios to the participants in order to enact the role play.

DAY-3

The day began at 8.45am with the previous day’s report presented by one of the
participant. After that the group activity (presentation session) was done by the groups of the

The scientific session was started with seminar presentation on assessment &
classification of anemia , fever & diarrhoea for 2months to 5 years of children by the
organizers (sakuntala Giri, Bharati Sahu & Mary preety Banra) .

Then a short tea break was announced.

The next session was started with panel discussion at 11.15 am and the panellists were
Shradhanjali Biswal, Aparnna Moharana, Jonaki Biswas & Ranjita Jena along with the
moderator madam Geetarani Nayak, HOD pediatric nursing. The discussion was effective
and the participants got further knowledge by the moderator madam. It was effective.

After that a lecture cum discussion was carried out by Prof. Dr. Dillip Kumar Dash,
Department of Pediatrics, IMS& SUM hospital. He discussed briefly about the assessment &
identification of diarrhoea for 2months to 5 year children . he elaborated the treatment &
management of Diarrhoea with very nice explanation by the videos and photographs.

The lunch break was announced at 1.15pm to 2.00 pm.

After the lunch break was resumed , the session was started with role play on counselling
of mothers on fever, anemia and diarrhea by the organizer group under the guidance of Ms
Sailabala Mohanty, Asst. Prof. It was effective for the group.
The valedictory session was started at 3.25 pm with the arrival of chief guest Prof.Pravati
Tripathy, Dean, SUM Nursing College, Prof. Tapati Saha, Additional Dean & Prof.
Geetarani Nayak, HOD Pediatric Nursing on the dias. The felicitation was done by the
organizer group.

Then one of the student from the participant group, Sangita Panda , presented the
participant view on workshop. According to her, the workshop was highly effective for the
group.

After that the report of workshop was presented by Swetarani Dalei, one of the student
coordinator from the organizer group . At 3.45pm the results of pretest & post test and the
effectiveness of the workshop through feedback analysis was presented by Sradhanjali
Biswal & Eliza Rath respectively ,

Then the speech was given by the guests on dias. After that, the certificates of
participation were distributed to the group . Then the day was over with the vote of thanks by
Swetarani Dalei , student coordinator and the photo session.
