Term paper for the course ‘Digital signal processing (EE-605A)’
TOPIC : Representation & classification of discrete time signals & systems and basic
mathematical tools used for signal processing
OBJECTIVE:
TPO1: To represent discrete-time signals analytically and visualize them in the time domain.
TPO2: To be familiar with the meaning and implications of the properties of discrete time
systems and signals.
TPO3: To analyze and implement digital signal processing systems in time domain.
TPO4: To analyze digital signal processing systems using Z-transform.
QUESTIONS:
1.a) With an example, explain causal system. Why are non- causal systems unrealizable? (4)
b) Consider the system shown in figure below with h(n)= an u(n) with 1 >a> -1 and
x(n) = u(n+5)- u(n-10). Determine the response y(n). (3+3)
2.a) Prove the condition for causality for a LTIDT system with input signal x(n) and impulse
response h(n).
b) Derive the relationship between z- transform and Fourier transform.
c) Test the following systems for time-invariance i) y(n) = nx2 (n) ii) y(n) = x(-n)
(4+2+4)
3.a) Find the z- transform of x(n) = cos nα u(n) .
b) Find the inverse z- transform of X(z) = log(1-0.5z-1 ) ; | z| > 0.5 using differentiation
property. (5+5)
4. a) Show that the product of two even signals or of two odd signals is an even signal and
that the product of an even and and odd signal is an odd signal. (5)
b) Determine which of the following signals are periodic and compute their fundamental
period. a) Sin√2πn b) sin20πn+ sin5πn (2+3)
