Reading
16 Read the web forum on the future and answer the questions.

Liam
I think that there will be huge advances in technology, so it’s hard to imagine what life will be
like in 50 years. I think there may well not be any shops, so we’ll all do our shopping online.
We’ll all have robots at home to do all our cleaning and we’ll probably all have microchips, so
we’ll be able to read each other’s thoughts. Change is inevitable, so I welcome the changes
and look forward to exciting times.
Fred
I’m not so interested in technology personally. I just wonder what’s going to happen to life
expectancy. There’s so much in the media about how we’re all living longer now and of course
that’s true when you look at how long our grandparents lived, but can you imagine most
people living until they’re over 100? Who’s going to look after us all and will we be healthier? I
wouldn’t want to be old if I wasn’t healthy.
Erica
Technology and life expectancy? What about our planet? I can’t believe you spend time
thinking about the future when there most probably won’t be one. If we continue to damage
our environment as we are doing at the moment, who would want to be alive anyway? There
won’t be any fresh water, the temperatures will be so high that a lot of countries won’t be able
to produce enough food and on it goes. Let’s focus on the present instead and try to improve
what we have.
Fiona
There will definitely have to be changes to our diet. If we want to live longer and stay healthy,
we need to stop eating so much junk food and start eating fresh food. The world is getting
heavier and I think that it’s the amount of food that people are consuming that is the problem,
not the number of people. In addition, if people don’t change the way they eat, I don’t think life
expectancy will increase.
Julia
Well as I’m interested in travel, I’m looking forward to being able to travel around the world
more quickly. I’m sure there will be faster aeroplanes or perhaps we’ll all have our own flying
machines. I’m not sure whether people really will be able to live on the moon, certainly not in
our lifetime, but it’s something to think about. Of course if the oil runs out, then we won’t be
able to drive our own cars anymore, so we all may well end up staying at home.
Peter
None of you have mentioned our mental wellbeing! What about happiness? How do you see
our levels of happiness? We all know that money doesn’t make you happy, but do you think
that all these advances will improve our lives? A robot may well speed up your house cleaning,
but will it be a good friend? In my opinion a simple life with friends and family is much healthier
than being surrounded by all the gadgets and gizmos.

Who is enthusiastic about the future? Liam

1 Who doesn’t believe people will live longer?
2 Who doesn’t approve of all the technological developments?
3 Who is concerned about growing old?
4 Who is interested in exploring new places to live?
5 Who is worried about life today?
