FIBER BRAGG GRATING BASED ACCELEROMETER WITH ENHANCED SENSITIVITY
Abstract :-Over the past decade, extensive studies and research have opened a new era for Fiber Bragg
Grating (FBG) based sensing technologies. One of the new applications is the FBG based accelerometers.
In various field applications, FBG based accelerometers are replacing conventional electronic sensors,
due to their long term stability, high accuracy and low power consumption. This report includes,
theoretical analysis on FBG followed by its sensing principle. Here, studies are made on FBG based
accelerometers for their unique transducer designs and signal interrogation techniques, and most
importantly their possible use for measuring acceleration.
1. Introduction
Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) has been widely accepted and applied in various of sensing and monitoring
fields such as industrial sensing, biomedical device, mechanical and civil engineering, aerospace, and, oil
and gas. Compared with other techniques, FBG sensor demonstrates a number of distinguishing
advantages: immunity to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) radiation; wavelength encoded; self-
referencing; linear output; small and lightweight; Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and Time
Division Multiplexing (TDM) compatibility; mass producible; durable; single and multi-point sensing .
Due to these superior advantages, FBG shows enormous potential of temperature, strain, pressure and
radiation effect of sensing in smart structures and polymeric materials.
2. FBG BASED ACCELEROMETER
2.1. Fiber Bragg Grating
FBGs are intrinsic fiber elements in photosensitive fibers where index of refraction in the fiber core is
periodically modulated by illuminating with UV light (Figure. 1) . Since the phase difference between
adjacent reflections is dependent on the wavelength; this implies that the overall reflection from such a
medium would be strongly wavelength dependent, according to the Bragg condition as given in Eq.1
λB=2neffʌ ……(1)
where, λB is Bragg wavelength, neff is effective refractive index and ʌ is grating period

2.2. Sensing Principle:- Over the years, extensive studies and research have found that the Bragg
wavelength varies w.r.t imposed strain changes on the optical fiber. In general, while straining the fiber,
Bragg wavelength shifts in optical domain as a consequence of both grating pitch(due to simple elastic
elongation) and effective refractive index. The relative change in ʌ is mathematically given in Eq.2
ΔλB =λB(1-Pe)Δε …….(2)
Where, Δε is the strain experienced by fiber at FBG location and Pe is strain-optic coefficient .
2.3. FBG based accelerometer:- An accelerometer is a device that detects acceleration on certain
objects. In order for aFBG to act as an accelerometer, the acceleration must be coupled with mechanical
loads on FBG through transducer. The load variation will impose strain changes on FBG and therefore
results wavelength shifts in reflected light, by interpreting the changes of light signal and acceleration
can be found, the signal transformation is given in figure
Fig.2-Detected signal transformation
Proposal:-Designation of a FBG based accelerometer, facilitates compact size and low fabricating cost
with enhanced sensitivity to establish it as an effective device for measuring acceleration efficiently.
