VEHICLE ROUTING AND
SCHEDULING
OBJECTIVES

INTRODUCTION
Collection of waste is an important logistic activity
within any city. Vehicle routing and scheduling utilizes the
collection of waste in an efficient way. Its concern is finding
cost optimal routes for garbage trucks such that all garbage
bins are emptied and the waste is driven to disposal sites
while respecting customer time windows and ensuring that
drivers are given the breaks that the law requires.
ROUTING
The process of mapping out the unique ways
that one or more vehicles will take while they
deliver or collect stock from each of their stop
points. This involves considering the sequence of
stops, and the ways that will be taken by each
vehicle to successfully achieve this outcome.
SCHEDULING
The process of calculating and assigning
an arrival time for each stop, with drivers
being assigned shifts that adhere to working
hours
IMPORTANCE
The objective of most routing and scheduling
problems is to minimize the total cost of providing the
service. This includes vehicle capital costs, mileage, and
personnel costs.
It is also used to improve efficiency through
maximum utilization of transportation equipment and
personnel is a major concern,
CONCLUSION
Vehicle routing and scheduling utilizes the collection of waste in
an efficient way. Routing is the process of mapping out the unique ways
that one or more vehicles will take while they deliver or collect stock
from each of their stop points. Scheduling is the process of calculating
and assigning an arrival time for each stop, with drivers being assigned
shifts that adhere to working hours.
Vehicle routing and scheduling is important because it is used to
improve efficiency through maximum utilization of transportation
equipment and personnel is a major concern.
