Conveyor Horsepower & Chain Pull Guide

This document provides information and formulas for calculating horsepower and chain pull for conveyor systems. It discusses factors that affect the calculations for straight running and side flexing chains, including conveyor speed, weight of chain and product, product slippage, and number of starts per hour. Formulas are presented for calculating horsepower for straight running chains and a "G factor" for side flexing chains. Charts with chain specifications and tension values are also included.

HORSE POWER & CHAIN PULL CALCULATIONS

STRAIGHT RUNNING CHAINS

The calculation of horsepower and

maximum chain pull are dependent
on four factors:
Conveyor speed (in Feet/Minute)
Weight (chain and product)
Product slippage (accumulation)
Starts per hour

The following procedures will allow

you to calculate, under normal
situations, the horsepower required
for the conveyor.

Formula: To calculate Horspower

HP= .75 x speed x conveyor length x (WP + 2WC)
33,000

WP = Weight of Product
WC = Weight of chain

HORSE POWER & CHAIN PULL CALCULATIONS
SIDE FLEXING CHAINS

The calculations for side flexing

conveyors is more complex than
straight running conveyors. To
calculate the chain tension, you
need to determine the “G”
factor:

Formula: To calculate G factor

G = (WP + 2WC) x PLF x SP
After calculating the G factor, refer to the chain tension chart to determine
chain tension. Use the actual length of conveyor for chart look-up.

PLF CHART SP CHART (slippage factor)

No. of Starts Peak Load Percent of time product slips on chain
Per Hour Factor % of time Slippage factor
0 1 0 1
8 1.5 15 1.4
15 1.8 30 1.5
25 2 50 1.6
