AWS D1.

1:2015 Structural Welding Code - Steel

How do we find information in AWS D1.1?

Keywords
1. What is the lowest ambient temperature at which welding may be done according
to AWS D1.1?

a) Less than 0°F

b) Less than 18°F
c) 0°F
d) 18°F
e) None of the above

There are specific keywords in each question that give you a clue as to where to start
your search for the answer.
Temperature, ambient, 5.11.2 pg 169, from that we find that the answer is 'c'
I
Primary vs Secondary Keywords
2. What is the proper width of a root bend test coupon from a 6 inch, Schedule 40
pipe.

a) 1 inch
b) 1-1/2 inches
c) 1-1/4 inches
d) 2 inches
e) None of the above

Primary keywords can be used as starting points. Secondary keywords cannot be used as
starting points but are necessary to answer the question.
Bend test requirements, 4.9.3.1, fig 4.8 pg 147
At fig 4.8 Secondary keywords come into play. This defines the answer as 'b'

Keywords in the Answers

3. Steel backing for welds in statically loaded structures:
a) Need not be welded full length or removed
b) Need not be welded full length on removed unless specified by the Engineer
c) Need not be welded full length or removed unless specified by the Contractor
d) Shall be removed prior to inspection
e) Shall be welded full length, need not be removed

There are Primary keywords in the question and the answers.

Backing, removal of, 5.9.1.5 pg 169 the answer is 'b'
What is the question really asking for?
4. The maximum weld reinforcement permitted for a procedure qualification test on
6G pipe having a wall thickness of 1-1/2 inches is:

a) 1/32 inch
b) 1/16 inch
c) 1/8 inch
d) 3/16 inch
e) 5/16 inch

The keywords here "reinforcement" and "procedure qualification test" will not lead us to the
necessary sub clause. (Note: for the purpose of explaining this concept the answer is
found in sub clause 4.9.1.1 paragraph 3), but why?
Well, what is the question really asking for? The core issue in the question is "acceptance
criteria" for a "visual inspection" of a procedure qualification test, measuring what is the acceptable
limit of the "reinforcement".
So, it’s not in section 6 or 9, the answer lies in section 4 for “qualification”

Acceptance criteria, Visual, 4.9.1, 4.9.1.1 (3) pg 111 so the answer is 'c'
