Intro To Waves Lab Sheet

This document provides directions for an intro to waves lab involving two simulations on Discovery Education. Students are instructed to explore longitudinal and transverse waves, describing how frequency, amplitude, wavelength, and speed affect wave properties. They are then asked to draw and label examples of transverse, longitudinal, and generic waves.

Intro to Waves Lab Sheet

Name: _________________________

Directions: Log into Discovery Education. Go to your assignment list and click on the assignment
Makin’ Waves. You will be working with this simulation to complete the first portion of your lab.

● Read through the introduction paragraph that pops up. (The green speaker on the top right will read it
to you.)
● You will first explore a longitudinal wave. Select that wave from the drop down box then answer the
following questions.
1. When you increase the frequency of the wave, describe what happens. When you lower the frequency,
describe what happens.

2. When you increase amplitude, describe what happens. When you decrease amplitude, describe what
happens.

● Next, you will explore a transverse wave. Select that wave form the drop down box then answer the
following questions.
3. When you increase the frequency the frequency of the wave, describe what happens. When you lower the
frequency, describe what happens.

4. When you increase amplitude, describe what happens. When you decrease amplitude, describe what
happens.

5. After looking at both waves in the simulation, describe what you think frequency means.

6. Describe what you think amplitude means.

7. Draw two examples of a transverse wave. One with low frequency and one with high frequency.

8. Draw an example of a longitudinal wave.

9. Compare and contrast a transverse and longitudinal wave.

Directions: In Discovery Education, go back to your assignment list and click on the assignment
Describing Waves. Then click on “use resource”. You will be working with this simulation to complete
the second portion of your lab.

10. For the wave displayed on the screen, does that represent a longitudinal or transverse wave?
Explain.

11. Increase the amplitude of the wave on your screen, describe what happens to the wave.

12. Increase the frequency of the wave on your screen, describe what happens to the wave.
13. As the frequency of the wave increases, what happens to the wavelength?

14. Decrease the wavelength of your wave on the screen, describe what happens.

15. Describe what you think wavelength is.

16. Change the speed of the wave to medium and high. As you increase the speed of the wave, explain
how that affects some of the properties of the waves. Be specific!

17. Draw a wave that is traveling at a high speed. Draw a wave that is traveling at a low speed. Be sure
to label which one is traveling fast and which one is traveling slow.

18. Draw and label an example of a wave. Be sure to label: crest, trough, amplitude, wavelength.
