Free tuition, road to a brighter future

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) will receive a budget increase this year as the
Senate gave the Commission a realignment of Php 8.3 billion to their yearly allotment intended
in subsidizing the tuition fees of students in state colleges and universities (SUCs), making their
college education free. This move of the Senate is a milestone for millions of youth who want to
reach their dreams through finishing their education.

Making into consideration the current standards of living, this is a great help to families. Most
poor families reason out that they let their children not to continue college because of lack of
money. This will not be a problem anymore for many families. Instead, they can allot more of
their family income on their everyday needs like food.

The said move can also encourage more students to study college. Since these are all intended
by the government as centers of excellence in different fields, students can choose a variety of
courses that they want to pursue. This can replenish the country’s brain drain and can support
the growing demand for additional professionals due to the booming economy.

Another, students can only concentrate in their studies with this great initiative. Remember that
during the past years, a number of students were reportedly committing suicide because they
cannot continue their college education. With the free tuition fee program, students’ worries on
paying their tuition fees will be lessened and their supposed money to be used to pay tuition can
be used for their educational needs in college.

The Senate’s allocation of additional funds for free tuition fees of college students in SUCs greatly
helps a lot of students who aspire to have a decent life in the future. Giving them this great
opportunity can increase not only the number of students pursuing college but also the number
of professionals in the future who will make our country great again.

For the next years to come, the Congress should increase its allotment for CHED so that it can
add more funds in providing free tuition fees for students. Not only that, they should give more
allocation to the education sector as a whole so that they can fully establish a sound Filipino
education system. A good educational foundation leads to a bright future.

colleges and universities (SUCs).
