Modern Physics Assignment PH121

The assignment covers key topics in modern and computational physics including optical fibers, magnetic materials, and superconductivity. Students are instructed to (1) explain different types of optical fibers and how they minimize pulse dispersion, (2) discuss mechanisms of attenuation and dispersion in optical fibers, and (3) derive relationships involving numerical aperture, acceptance angle, and other magnetic and superconducting quantities. The assignment will contribute 10% toward students' final grades and aims to provide an in-depth understanding of applications of these physics concepts.

Department of Applied Sciences (Physics)

Assignment No. 2

Course Title: Modern and Computational Physics Course Code: PH121

Instructions:
1. It is mandatory for all the students of sections 3,4 and 8.
2. The assignment will be evaluated and will carry 10% weighatge along with sessional
and END term exams for evaluation of grades.
Learning Objectives

To provide an in-depth knowledge about the optical fibre, magnetic materials and
superconductivity and their applications

1. What are single mode, multimode and graded index fibres? Also explain the difference in
structures of single mode step index and multiple mode graded index fibre along with their
applications. Explain how pulse dispersion is minimized in graded index fibre?
2. The loss of amplitude is referred to as attenuation and change in shape as distortion or
dispersion. Discuss the various mechanisms responsible for attenuation and dispersion in
optical fibre.
3. Provide a detailed description of an optical fibre communication system using a block
diagram
4. What is acceptance angle? Derive a relationship between numerical aperture and
acceptance angle.
5. Define magnetizing field, magnetic flux density, permeability, intensity of magnetization
and susceptibility. Also Derive the mathematical relationships among these physical
quantities.
6. Distinguish between diamagnetic, paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, anti-ferromagnetic and
ferromagnetic materials.
7. Show that the loss of energy due to hysteresis per unit volume of the material per cycle of
magnetization is given by (i) μ0 × area of I-H Loop and (ii) area of B-H loop.
8. Explain the origin of magnetic moment. Find the magnetic dipole moment due to orbital and
spin motions of electron.
9. On the basis of hysteresis curve, distinguish between the hard and soft magnetic materials.
Also discuss their applications
10. What is the significance of critical temperature, critical magnetic field and critical current
density for superconductor?
11. Derive London equations and using these equations show that within superconductor the
current density reduces exponentially to initial value of the current density.
12. Why are superconductors said to be ideal diamagnetic materials? Also highlight the
difference between an ordinary diamagnetic material and a superconductor.
13. Differentiate graphically between type-i and type-ii superconductors.
14. What are the experimental facts that outline the basic formulation of BCS theory of
superconductivity? Give brief outline of this theory.
