Introduction
Four (4) students of a group were selected to do a project of collecting
the required for the BMI for the class of 11 Boyd-Brown. With the help
of a scale and measuring tape, each student’s height was taken in (cm) as
well as their weight in (grams). The weight was divided by the height
(W/H) to find the BMI of each student. The Body Mass Index (BMI) of
a person is defined as a measure of body fat which is the ratio of the
weight of the body measured in kilograms to the square of the height
measured in meters squared.
BMI was used as a measure of the student’s physical features and health
as it is the most suitable measure. Not only is it non-invasive, it is also
inexpensive, simple and non-time consuming and it gives a measure of
the individual’s body fat based on their weight in relation to height. The
BMI scale is then used to categorize individuals into either underweight,
normal weight, overweight or obese.

Scale
Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
Overweight = 25–29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

Method of Data Collection
Each student height was taken in (cm) as well as their weight in (grams)
with the help of a scale and measuring tape. The weight was then
divided by the height (W/H) to find the BMI.
The heights and weights of students in a sample of 25 students were
measured.
The Body Mass Index (BMI) of each student was calculated using the
formula

Mathematical Knowledge/ Analysis of Data
The data collected from the experiment
revealed in the information collected from
11Boyd-Brown class students, the girls in the
class are healthier than the boys. The data
collected from the BMI pie chart data shows
that the boys are more unhealthy than the girls
in the class. The boys are 75% healthy and the
Commented [P8]: Rephrase. Kind of redundant
girls are 77% healthy, the pie graph shows that
the boys are more overweight than the girls by
17% and the girls are overweight by 4%, that
shows that the girls are healthier than the boys
by just 2%.

Conclusion
In this experiment, participants were all taken from the same class so that the environment would
not influence their results. Also, this conclusion only pertains to 11 Boyd-Brown and may not be
true for other grade 11 classes. However, it shows that students height and weight are Commented [P9]: Talk about the BMI in terms of studetns
weight and height.
Limitations of this project are that the Body Mass Index does not distinguish between fat and
muscle, which can categorize muscular individuals into the unhealthy category and the Body
Mass Index calculation is solely dependent on the net weight and height of the individual and
does not consider the distribution of muscle and bone mass.
