Reaction Philosophy
The production rate of MeOH varies with the reaction variables
such as:
Catalyst
Temperature
Pressure
Circulating gas flow rate
Synthesis gas composition, etc.
There is a strong relation between these variables. If one of them
changes, it generally makes some changes on other variables.
The main reactions for methanol synthesis are
𝐶𝑂 + 2𝐻2 ↔ 𝐶𝐻3 𝑂𝐻 (1)
𝐶𝑂2 + 𝐻2 ↔ 𝐶𝑂 + 𝐻2 𝑂 (2)
𝐶𝑂2 + 3𝐻2 ↔ 𝐶𝐻3 𝑂𝐻 + 𝐻2 𝑂 (3)
Equation (1) and (3) are exothermic reaction.
Equation (2) is endothermic reaction.
Equation (2) produces carbon monoxide which
is used to produce methanol by Equation (1).
Equation (1) can produce many types of by-
product at equilibrium. (It is a major problem
because I cannot predict what by-product may
show up)
Thus,
It is extremely important to control the
reaction in equation (2) to avoid getting
many types of by-products by equation
(1). This could be done if carbon dioxide
is converted directly to methanol by the
reaction in equation (3).
It is important to remove excess heat
generated by the exothermic reactions in
equation (1) and (3) so that reaction rate
won’t be lowered
