Electronegativity Values Chart

1. The document lists the electronegativity values on the Pauling scale for each element in the periodic table. 2. Generally, electronegativity increases moving from left to right across the periodic table as more protons are added, strengthening the pull on electrons. 3. Electronegativity decreases moving down a group as the distance between the nucleus and electrons increases, weakening the pull despite more protons.

General trends in electronegativity:

Electronegativity increases to the right…because the # of protons increases, strengthening the pull of the nucleus on
electrons in a bond while the new electrons are placed on the outer level, not increasing shielding as dramatically. This
strengthens the pull of the nucleus on bonding electrons.

Electronegativity decreases downward…because the distance between the nucleus and the bonding electrons increases with
the addition of an entire energy level. This outweighs the addition of more protons to the nucleus, weakening the pull of the
nucleus on bonding electrons.
