Appropriate technologies to improve the delivery of care to pregnant

mother, newborn and adolescents
For pregnant mothers:

Playback  Health  is  a  secure,  HIPAA-compliant,  cloud-based  multimedia  platform that delivers video highlights
of  physician-patient  encounters  to  patients'  smartphones  or  computers,  capturing  physicians'  explanations  of
diagnoses,  treatments,  and  procedures,  as  well  as  diagnostic  images.  Patients  especially  mothers  can review the video
and  images  through  an  app,  which  includes  other  features  such  as  a  list  of  care  team  members  and  patient
responsibilities.  Patients  can  share  this  information  with  family  members,  other  providers,  and  friends.  There  is  no
charge to the patient for the app.

Spire  Health  Tag,  a  wearable  device  the  size  of  a  key  fob,  measures  patients'  breathing,  heart  rate,  sleep,  and
movement,  and  conveys  data  to  a  clinician-monitored  dashboard  or  a smartphone. This remote patient-monitoring
solution  can  be  attached  to  clothing such as undergarments, requires no recharging, and survives accidental damage,
such  as  cycles  through  the  washer  and  dryer.  While  worn,  Health  Tag  collects  and  analyzes  data,  and  uses  artificial
intelligence  (AI)  to  detect  physiological  patterns  that  are  early  warning  signs  of  problems  or  illness.these  includes
children, adults, elderly, Pregnant women to use.

A  toco  transducer,  or  simply  toco,  is  a  device  used  to  detect  and  monitor  the  changes  in  your  patient’s
abdomen during a contraction. It records how frequent the contractions happen and how long they last.

Vacuum.If your patient is having

a hard time pushing the baby out, a vacuum extractor may be necessary. This is a small suction cup that is placed on top
of the baby’s head. When a contraction comes, the doctor will slowly pull the baby out with the device as the mother
gently pushes.

An ultrasound machine is not a treatment for any condition, but
is performed only for diagnostic purposes. Ultrasounds are considered part of routine maternal-fetal care. The
benefits of having a diagnostic ultrasound in pregnancy are numerous. It can confirm the presence of a fetal
heartbeat, detect the presence of multiple babies, monitor the baby’s growth, detect some, but not all, birth defects,
establish an accurate due date, evaluate placental function and position, evaluate amniotic fluid volume, and fetal
presentation.

For newborn:

Respirator or mechanical ventilator. This machine helps babies who can't breathe on their own or who need
help taking bigger breaths. High frequency ventilators give hundreds of very fast puffs of air to help keep a baby's
airways open. Ventilators can also give extra oxygen to the baby.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Through small tubes that fit into the baby's nostrils, called nasal
CPAP, this machine pushes a continuous flow of air to the airways to help keep tiny air passages in the lungs open. CPAP
can give extra oxygen as well. It may also be given through an ET tube.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). This is a special treatment for babies with respiratory disease
that does not respond to maximum medical care. With ECMO, blood from the baby's vein is pumped through an artificial
lung where oxygen is added and carbon dioxide is removed. The blood is then returned back to the baby. ECMO is only
used in specialized NICUs.

Heart or cardiorespiratory monitor. This monitor displays a baby's heart and breathing rates and patterns on a
screen. Wires from the monitor are attached to adhesive patches on the skin of the baby's chest, and abdomen.

Blood pressure monitor. Blood pressure is measured using a small cuff placed around the baby's upper arm or
leg. Periodically, a blood pressure monitor pumps up the cuff and measures the level of blood pressure. Some babies
need continuous blood pressure monitoring. This can be done using a catheter (small tube) in 1 of the baby's arteries.

A  temperature  probe  is  placed  on  the  baby's  skin  with  an  adhesive  patch.  A  wire  connects  the  temperature
probe to the overhead warmer (or incubator) to help regulate the heat needed to keep the baby warm.

The  fetal  monitor.  Along  with  your  bed,  your  IV  pole,  and  your  blood  pressure  equipment,  most  labor  and
delivery  rooms  house  a  bedside  fetal  monitor  that  attaches  to  the  mother's  belly  to  monitor  contractions  and  the
baby's  heart  rate.  One  note:  Be  careful  about  watching  those  contractions  on  the  screen  --  they're  usually  external
monitors  that  measure  the  rate  and  rhythm  of  your  contractions  and  can't  tell  you the true intensity, so what looks
like  a  "small"  contraction  on  the  screen  might  feel  a  bit  more  intense!  The  fetal  monitor  also  usually  houses  a
computer where your nurse will input vital medication information to keep track of your labor's progress.

An  incubator  (or  isolette  or  humidicrib)  is  an  apparatus  used  to  maintain  environmental  conditions
suitable for a neonate (newborn baby). It is used in preterm births or for some ill full-term babies. There is additional
equipment used to evaluate and treat sick neonates.

For adolescents :

Vision  Screener  plusoptiX  S16  for  those practices who wish to photoscreen children in a dedicated “screening”
room  rather  than  bring  a  mobile  screener  into  the  exam  room  with  the  patient.  The  S16  features  a  handheld screener
tethered  to  a  base  (a  computer  in  disguise)  that  is  connected  to  a  monitor,  mouse,  and  keyboard (all not included).
The  user  interface  is  easy  to  navigate  and  one  can  print  results  via  any  network-connected  printer.Plusoptix  also
recently  implemented  a  universal  printer  driver  for  Windows  computers  called  plusoptiXconnect  that  facilitates
sharing your findings with patients.

Blood Glucose monitoring using digital tattoos looks to be a great solution to spare patients-both adult and
children-the  discomfort  of  monitoring  glucose.  Researchers  have  developed  an  amazing  electronic  skin  patch
(graphene patch) that detects a higher than normal level of glucose in the patient’s sweat.

The  CHAMP  App  is  a  cutting  edge  PC  tablet-supported  application  that  simplifies  at-home  monitoring.  This
device  is  tailor  made  for  families  of  children  born  with  a  single  ventricle  heart  defect.  This  app  is  the  first  to  offer
effective  inter-stage  monitoring.  Parents  and  medical  teams  are  able  to  “track  everything  from  the  child’s  oxygen
saturation levels to nutritional intake”.

The  first  double  hand  transplant  on  a  pediatric  patient: the advance of technology has enabled more complex
surgery  –  changing  the  lives  of  the  children  that  need  it.  The  world’s  first  hands  transplant  was  performed  on an 8
year  old  child.  This  enabled  him  to  fulfil  his  dream  of  swinging  a  baseball  bat  for  the  first  time with two functional
hands. This research and procedure was a successful collaboration involving the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and
Penn Medicine.

Cloud  based  Technology  Thermometer:  New  cloud  based  technology  is  becoming  increasingly  popular  these
days.  The  CliniCloud  system  developed  in  San  Francisco,  California includes a wireless thermometer and a stethoscope

that  attaches  to  a  smartphone.  Parents  are  able  to  create  a  record  of  their  child’s  temperature  and  breathing  sounds
from  four  places  on  the  chest.  These  outcomes  can  be  sent  using  a  portal  to their physician. Their physician can access
these recordings and make recommendations of what further action should be taken.

The  new  D-Eye  and PEEK Phone Technology a device that is transforming the practice of pediatricians and their
patients.  This  technology  enables  the  physician  to  accurately  visualize  the  retina  and  optic  disk and make an accurate
diagnosis  of  potential  retinal  hemorrhages  or  papilledema.  Another  similar  device  is  called  PEEK  Retina  (created  by
Peek  Vision  London).  This  device  was  created  by  a  team  of  interdisciplinary  ophthalmologists,  engineers  and  optics
experts from London’s Moorfield Eye Hospital.T
