Classification of Crops and Their Parts in Crop production

INTRODUCTION

As the crop scientist look into nature to appraise and evaluate the different kinds of
crops growing in this planet, he or she may feel frustrated by their large number and great
diversity. Higher members of the plant kingdom are broadly classified into field crops,
horticultural crops, forest and range species and weeds. Field crops which include all cultivated
herbaceous plants grown under a relatively extensive system of culture may not always have
distinct differences compared to other crops like horticultural crops. However, they can be
systematically classified into various ways. Such classification makes for clear and relevant
approaches to the discussion for the many species and their uses.

There are many alternatives in classifying crop plants. Some of the more obvious routes
of classification include: a) agronomic use, b) special purpose, c) horticultural classification, d)
leaf retention, e) structure and form, f) climatic adaptation, g) usefulness, h) photorespiration, i)
photoperiod requirements, j) temperature, and k) botanical.

OBJECTIVES

1. To identify some agronomic and horticultural crops grown in the campus.


2. To get acquainted with the different plants with specialized/modified parts used for
propagation.

PROCEDURE

1. Make a survey of the different field crops cultivated in MSUN.


2. Tabulate these crops under the following heading: category, local name/English
name, scientific name, family name, means of propagation and economic use.
QUESTIONS

1. Explain and give the distinct characteristics of the nine categories of agronomic
crops.
- Agronomic crops are those that occupy large acreage, and are the bases of the
world’s food and fiber production systems, often mechanized. Examples are
wheat, rice, corn, soybean, alfalfa, and forage crops, beans, sugar beets, canola
and cotton
- These are the grasses grown for their edible seeds and those crops which are
cultivated according to my understanding in the agronomic classification in page
2.

2. What is the importance of classifying crops?


- The importance of classifying crops are helps in identification of related crop
plants used for various purposes such as food, feed and fiber or essential for
ordinary reference and avoiding confusion in identification.
- The most importance of crops are to get acquainted with crops, to understand
the requirement of soil and water different crops, to know the growing habit of
crops, to know adaptability of crops, to understand the climatic requirement of
different crops, to know economic produce of the crop plant and its use, to know
growing season of the crop and last overall to know the actual condition required
to the cultivation of the plants.

3. If you owned a 5-heactare farm, what crops will you grow and why?
- If I have a 5-hectare farm in my privilege. Much better to plant the short term
production of crops in my yield. Short term like upland rice, eggplant, sweet
potato, ginger and etc. because the more you produce the more the humans
need. In a present of economics are also increasing by the every month of
harvest.

4. Differentiate separation from division in terms of propagating modified plant parts


and specialized organs.
- In a vegetative propagation is a form of asexual reproduction of a plant. Only one
plant is involved and the offspring is the result of one parent. The new plant is
genetically identical to parent.
- Many herbaceous species that die back at the end of the growing season have
underground food storage organs that survive the dormant winter period. These
organs are also vegetative propagation structures that produce new shoots in the
growing season.
- We include that there are two propagations. Sexual Reproduction and Asexual or
Vegetative Reproduction. Sexual reproduction is seeds from the genetic parent
and asexual reproduction is a vegetative plant part like roots, stems, cuttings and
other techniques.
