This tutorial is corresponding to Unit No. I.
Question
1 A shed is proposed to be constructed at Delhi in terrain category 3 on flat topography. The
slope of the roof truss is corresponding to a pitch of 1/5. The average height of roof above
the ground is 5.0 m. Determine the design wind pressure for a) Normal, b) Medium and
c)Large permeability respectively. The eave level is at 5.0m from ground level and width
of shed is 40m.
2 The trusses for a factory building are spaced at 4.5 m c/c and the purlins are spaced at 1.5
m c/c. The pitch of truss is ¼ and the span of the roof is 10m. The vertical load from roof
sheets etc are equal to 180 N/m2 while the design wind pressure on roof surface normal to
the roof is equal to 1200 N/m2. Design purlins taking: a) I section and b)Angle section.
3 Roof truss of 30m span and 4.0 m rise are spaced 5 m apart in an industrial shed. Eave
level is 6.0 m above ground level. The structure is located in a wind zone of 47 m/s basic
wind speed. The building has a permeability of about 15%. Find the design loads at panel
points. Material for roof sheeting is corrugated steel sheet with weight of 120 N/m2 of plan
area.
4 Design Principal rafter of a roof truss for a factory building for a span of 25m and a pitch
of 1/4. The spacing of trusses is 4.5m. The factory building which is 36m long is situated
at Delhi. Take fy = 250N/mm2 for the steel sections. Provide fink truss.
5 Design a steel roof truss for a clear span of 15m. The truss is supported over masonry
columns 45cm x 45cm.The trusses are placed 3m c/c and supporting galvanized iron sheet
on rafters and steel purlins. The rise of truss is 1/3 of span. The design wind pressure may
be assumed to be 1250 N/m2.
6 A hand operated 50 KN overhead crane is provided in an industrial shed. Design the
gantry girder for following details –
Longitudinal spacing the columns = 5 m
C/C distance between gantry girders = 18m
wheel spacing = 3.0 m
Minimum edge distance =1.0m
Weight of crane bridge = 50KN
Weight of trolley car = 10 KN
7 Design a simply supported gantry girder to carry an electric overhead travelling crane for
the following data:
Crane capacity – 500 kN
Weight of crane bridge – 400 kN
Weight of crab – 80 kN
Minimum approach of crane hook – 1.20 m
Distance between wheels – 4.0m c/c
Distance between gantries – 16.0m c/c
Span of gantry girder – 5m
Weight of rails – 300 N/m
Height of rails – 75mm
Yield stress of steel – 250MPa

4 An open web girder railway bridge consists of two Pratt trusses of type shown
in Figure below. The span of the truss is 40 m c/c of bearings. The bridge
supports an equivalent uniformly distributed live load of 180 kN/m run. The
dead load transmitted to each truss inclusive of self weight is 25 kN/m run.
Design the members U2U3 and U2 L3. Assume the impact factor to be 15%.

1. Design stand pipe for water capacity of 100 kL. Take wind pressure intensity
of 1.50kN/m2.

2. Design an overhead rectangular tank for a capacity of 150 kL. The height of
columns is to be kept as 10.5m above the ground. The wind pressure intensity
of 1.5 kN/m2.

3. Design a square pressed steel tank of size 5m x 5m in plan and 2.5m high. The
height of columns above the ground is 12m. Take wind pressure intensity of
1.5kN/m2.

4. Design an elevated rectangular pressed steel tank having a capacity of 150


KL. The tank is open at top. Keep the height of tank container as 5.0 m. The
height of staging is 12m upto the top of the columns.

5. Design an overhead steel rectangular flat bottom tank of capacity 70kL. The
available width of plates is 1.3 m and length upto 6m. The staging consists of
4 columns, spaced 4.5m x 3.6m and the bottom of the tank is 9.m above the
ground level. Design also the supporting beams.

6. Design the container of an elevated cylindrical steel tank with suspended


bottom for 250 kL water capacity with circular girder supported on suitable
number of columns. The shape of bottom may be assumed suitably.

Q. No. Question

1 Design a chimney shell of a self supporting chimney of effective height equal to


30m, having its diameter at top equal to 2m.Taking a uniform wind pressure
intensity of 1.5 kN/m2 throughout the height.

2 Design a self supporting chimney stack of height equal to 50m and diameter at
top equal to 3.6m. Follow the recommendations of IS code for the design of
chimney. Take wind loads as per IS code. The chimney is located at Jaipur in
terrain category 2 on flat topography.

3 Check the design of chimney of Q.2 for Earthquake forces.

4 Design base plate and foundation bolts for the chimney designed in Q.1. The
bearing stress in supporting concrete is 4 N/mm2.

5 A self supporting steel chimney is 60m high and has a diameter of 3m at the top.
Design the plate of the chimney shell. The horizontal wind pressure may be
assumed as 1.5kN/m2. Also design the base plate and the anchor bolts. The
bearing stress in cement concrete is 4 N/mm2.

6 Design for Delhi a self supported steel stack of height 72m above the foundation.
The diameter of cylindrical part of the chimney is 3m. The foundation has to rest
on medium soil having bearing capacity of 200 kN/m2. The thickness of brick
lining is 115 mm which is supported by stack throughout the height. The
chimney has one breech opening. The topography at the site is almost flat and
location is Terrain Category 2.

7 Design the shell of a self supporting chimney of 100 m height at Malanpur


industrial area. The diameter of cylindrical shell is 5m. The chimney has 100m
thick brick lining supported on the shell.

8 Explain the design procedure for guyed chimney.
