Foundation Engineering Questions

The document contains 3 problems related to estimating settlement of foundations using strain influence factor methods. The first problem involves calculating settlement of a 4m x 2.5m rectangular foundation on a sand layer. The second estimates settlement of a 2m x 4m foundation at 1.2m depth using strain influence factors and soil properties. The third determines the allowable bearing pressure of an 8m x 12m raft foundation at 2m depth to limit differential settlement to 20mm, using N-value and water table depth.

ASSIGNMENT - 2

CEC-17104 - Foundation Engineering

1. A rectangular foundation 4 m x 2.5 m on a deposit of sand layer is shown in figure

below along with the variation of the modulus of elasticity of the soil (Es). Assuming γ
= 18 kN/m3 and C2 for 10 years, calculate the elastic settlement of the foundation using
the strain influence factor method.

2. Consider a rectangular foundation 2 m X 4 m in plan at a depth of 1.2 m in a sand
deposit as shown in figure below. Given γ = 17.5 kN/m3; q’ = 145 kN/m2, and the
following approximated variation of qc with z:
z (m) qc (kN/m2)
0-0.5 2250
0.5-2.5 3430
2.5-5.0 2950

Estimate the elastic settlement of the foundation using the strain influence factor
method. Assume the time of creep is 8 years

3. Determine the allowable bearing pressure of a raft foundation 8 m x 12 m in plan,

resting at 2m depth on a cohesionless soil. The corrected average N value over a depth
of 12 m was 22. It is specified that the differential settlement is not to exceed 20 mm.
water table is at a depth of 4 m below ground surface. Use Peck and Thornburn
correction.
