SEFI Wall Discussion

The document is a request for help finding background information and journal references for an equation in an Indian standard for calculating minimum horizontal steel in walls. It provides context that using the equation to calculate minimum horizontal steel for a 200m high wall with 0.8% longitudinal steel resulted in a high value of 8.87% horizontal steel.

Hi All,

We need some help in finding background information (derivation/journal reference) of the following
equation in table-1 (Cl. No. 10.2) of IS 13920-2016.

From this equation we were trying to find minimum horizontal steel for a wall of height 200m, length of
6m, with percentage of longitudinal steel in web as 0.8%. The minimum percentage of horizontal steel
comes out to be 8.87% (Which is too high – T32@15mm c/c). Please let us know if our approach is wrong.

Please see below snip for minimum horizontal steel for different percentage of longitudinal steel in web.

If anyone can share journal reference for the equation above is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ellampooranan
