Homework 4
Due on November 23, 2019
Question 1
Consider a workstation with 11 machines (in parallel), each requiring one hour of process
time per job with Ce2 = 5. Each machine costs $10,000. Orders for jobs arrive at a rate of 10
per hour with Ca2 = 1 and must be filled. Management has specified a maximum allowable
average response time (i.e., time a job spends at the station) of two hours. Currently it is
just over three hours (check it).
Analyze the following options for reducing average response time.
mr
a. Perform more preventive maintenance so that mr and mf are reduced, but m f
remains
the same. This costs $8,000 and does not improve the average process time but does
reduce Ce2 to one.
b. Add another machine to the workstation at a cost of $10,000. The new machine is
identical to existing machines, so te = 1 and Ce2 = 5.
c. Modify the existing machines to make them faster without changing the SCV (CV 2 ),
at a cost of $8,500. The modified machines would have te = 0.96 and Ce2 = 5.
What is the best option?
Question 2
Given attributes of a serial production line, consisting of two single-machine stations, as
follows:
Attribute Station 1 Station 2
t0 11 min 11 min
C0 0.5 0.5
MTTF 7 hrs 5 hrs
MTTR 1.5 hrs 0.5 hrs
Cr 0.75 0.5
Answer the following questions.
a. Which station is the effective bottleneck of the line?
b. Can the line sustain a production rate of 35 parts over an eight-hour shift?
c. Suppose that parts are released to the line in a deterministic manner, with constant
inter-arrival times, and the resulting mean cycle time at Station 1, CT1 , is 2 hours and
7.815 minutes. What is the length of the inter-arrival intervals?
d. What is the average WIP waiting for processing at Station 1 under the assumptions
of Part c above?
e. Provide estimates for the mean and the variance of the part inter-arrival times at
Station 2, under the assumptions stated in Part c above.

Question 3
A G/G/1 workstation is operated at 95% of the effective processing capacity. This work-
station is fed with parts at a constant rate of 6 parts an hour; and, the average waiting
time experienced by one particular part before entering the server is 45 minutes.
Compute the mean and the variance of the part inter-departure times.
