Tunnel Boring: Civil & Mining Use

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are cylindrical tunnel digging devices that rotate drill bits to grind rock as they move forward, creating circular tunnel surfaces. TBMs can be used to dig through soft to hard rock and range in diameter from 1 to 19 meters. They provide an alternative to conventional drilling and blasting methods, and are primarily used for constructing railway tunnels, underwater tunnels, and underground mines. The earliest successful TBM date back to 1825 when one dug the Thames Tunnel in England. Modern large-scale TBMs can cost tens of millions but allow tunnels to be constructed with immediate flat surfaces.

TUNNEL BORING MACHINE ( TBM )

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) is a tunnel digging device. Because the shape of the

machine resembles a cylinder, the surface of the tunnel that is formed becomes like a circle.

TBM can be used in soft rock to hard rock. Diamater this tool varies from a meter to 19 meters.

TBM is equipped with drill bits spread over the surface of the drill head. This cylindrical drill

head then rotates and grinds rocks. And so on while TBM moves forward.

TBM is used as an alternative method of Drilling and Blasting (D & B). Drilling and

blasting is a conventional method for making tunnels consisting of several stages with drilling

(blasting) and blasting (blowing) as the two main stages. TBM is mainly used for civil

construction (railway tunnels, underwater tunnels) and underground mines. Tunnels excavated

with TBM will immediately have a flat surface until finishing work is no longer needed. The

biggest shortage of TBM is in capital costs. The price of large-scale TBMs is clearly very

expensive, not to mention transportation constraints and supporting infrastructure that need to be

prepared in the field.

The history of TBM dates back to 1825, after the initial version of this machine

successfully dug the Thames tunnel in England. Of course at that time this machine was still

simple. After the tunnel is dug, the finishing process still needs to be done. The biggest TBM

was made by Herrenknecht AG of Schwanau, a German company. This machine has a diameter

of 19 meters, used to dig Gotthard Base tunnels along 57 km.
