It gives me immense pleasure to bring to you this exhaustive Internship Guidebook that the
Training and Recruitment Division of our college has compiled for the reference of law
students. Internship is the most important aspect of a Law School and contributes to bridge
the gap between classroom learning and practical exposure. However it has been observed
that fresh law students find it difficult to take their first step when it comes to interning,
therefore, the necessity of this guidebook was felt.

This guide will help the students in planning their Internships ahead and overcome the hurdle
of applying for the same. In addition to this, the guidebook also annexes a Sample Covering
Letter, Sample Curriculum Vitae and an exhaustive Directory of places to Intern at.

1. INTRODUCTION
A. WHAT IS A LEGAL INTERNSHIP?

A legal internship is a period of time (usually 4 weeks or 2 weeks, with or

without stipend) in which a law student can gain work experience in the legal
field by working with:

i. NGOs
ii. Trial or Appellate Advocates
iii. Judiciary
iv. Legal Regulatory Authorities
v. Legislatures
vi. Legal Functionaries
vii. Corporate Houses
viii. Law Firms
ix. any other organization with opportunity to learn or observe application
of law.

Interning will stand out on the students’ resume and help them with their job
search after graduation. Interns gain on-the-job training that integrates
education and career development. Everyone the students meets during the
course of their internship is now a contact. These people can help guide their
career path as they make their way into the professional world. These people
know other people in the industry as well and can provide introductions. The
fellow interns they meet may also become great contacts in the future.

B. WHY INTERN?

Internship provides students with:

i. Provide the student with a meaningful, practical work experience in a

professional law setting
ii. Assist the student in clarifying career goals
iii. Assess readiness to enter the law profession

identifying career goals, preparing a resume, interviewing, and
gathering information on prospective employers
vii. Become thoroughly acquainted with professional work environments
viii. Gain an understanding of attitudes and work habits that ensure a
successful career
ix. Develop professional-level skills in oral and written communication
x. Acquire a sound, contextual understanding of legal and professional
ethics, such as client confidentiality, conflict of interest, and the
unauthorized practice of law
xi. Learn to interact effectively with supervisors, co-workers, clients, and
professionals outside of the internship office
xii. Develop a first-hand understanding of law-related office organization
and internal systems, such as timekeeping, billing, and file
management
xiii. Gain first-hand insight into current career options
xiv. Acquire a wider range of professional contacts for future career
development
xv. Learn to manage time effectively and to account for time worked in an
office setting
xvi. Obtain a professional reference and recommendation for future
employment

3. APPLYING FOR INTERNSHIP

A. Students must apply for internship with a Covering Letter addressed to the
internship provider along with their CV and a Bona-fide
Certificate/Recommendation Letter from the College.
B. Students can apply by sending in the documents as aforesaid by post or by
email to the internship provider. In case of Judicial Internships with High
Court or Supreme Court Justices, do not address internship applications
directly to the Justices rather the applications should be sent to the Registrar
General of the concerned High Court or the Secretary General of the Supreme
Court, as the case may be.
C. Students must apply for internship at-least 3-4 months in advance and at-least
6 months in advance in case of Law Firms and Corporate Houses.
