SAND TRAP LOUVER SIZING CALCULATION
A. STL-01 [PACU-01]
1. From Free Area Chart, determine the effective pressure area by entering the dimensions of the sand trap louver.
Example: STL size is 42” width x 42” height the effective pressure area is 3.72 ft².
2. Calculate the velocity from the formula;
Given: Airflow = 567 L/s = 1200 cfm
EPA = 3.72 ft²
Velocity = Airflow / Effective Pressure Area
= 1200 cfm / 3.72 ft²
Velocity = 322 FPM
Note: For normal operation condition the sand trap louvers should be selected for a maximum free
area velocity of 600 feet per minute (FPM).
3. From Pressure Drop Chart, determine the resistance by drawing a straight line vertically up from the
calculated velocity to the pressure drop line. From the intersection draw a straight line horizontally and
read the pressure drop in inch of WG.
For STL 42” x 42”:
Pressure drop = 0.5 in. W.G. (125 Pa)
B. STL-02 [Storage]
1. From Free Area Chart, determine the effective pressure area by entering the dimensions of the sand trap louver.
Example: STL size is 18” width x 18” height the effective pressure area is 0.72 ft².
2. Calculate the velocity from the formula;
Given: Airflow = 130 L/s = 275 cfm
EPA = 0.72 ft²
Velocity = Airflow / Effective Pressure Area
= 275 cfm / 0.72 ft²
Velocity = 382 FPM
For STL 18” x 18”:
Pressure drop = 0.7 in. W.G. (175 Pa)
