BULLYING

It is very easy to assume that everyone (school leaders, teachers, students, society and
parents) knows what bullying is, bullying is the use of force, threat, aggressively
dominate or intimidate. When an individual or a group of people with more power and
repeated intension to deliberately or unknowingly hurt someone or a group (who feel
helpless to respond), physically (hitting, pushing, fighting, tripping, yelling at someone),
mentally or emotionally (name calling, making fun of, leaving someone out of purpose
etc.)
Furthermore, bullying is;
 Deliberate.
 Harmful.
 Involves a power imbalance.
 Has an element of repetition.
Bullying deliberately is harming someone intentionally by physical, emotional or
phycological means. It also involves a misuse of power in relationship i.e. power
imbalance an actual (or perceived) unequal relationship between those being bullied
and those who bully. For example, due to physical size, age, gender, social status or
digital capability and access.
It is never one off and has the potential to be repeated overtime with the threat of
further incidents leading to fear and anxiety. People may bully one person many times,
or different people each time.
Bullying involves a behavior that can harm or hurt someone there is short or long-term
physical or psychological harm to the target (e.g. as a result of coercion or intimidation)
that could lead to death.
People still cannot differentiate between what bulling is and what is not. Bulling can be
done anywhere anytime It can be physical and can be verbal as well, but not all verbal
and physical aggressions can be bullying for e.g.
 A one-off fight or argument, or difference of opinion between friends where there
is no power imbalance and they can sort it out between themselves.
 Not liking someone or a single act of social rejection.
 One off act of meanness.
 Taking someone else’s things once is theft but not necessarily bullying.
The examples above are can upset a person but it will not be considered as bulling. The
following table can explain difference in better way
Why is it important to understand bullying?
Twenty eight percent of young people from grades six through twelve have been the
victim of bullying. Teachers often underestimate how much bullying is occurring at their
schools. Parents are aware their child is being bullied only about half the time. It is a fact
that adult bullies who engage in these behaviors are males 60% of the time. While men
who bully tend to victimize both genders equally, women bullies target other women
about 80% of the time.
Bulling is a big social problem understanding it can help teachers, staff members, peers,
leaders, managers and people around to identify and work towards the prevention of it.
Types of Bullying:
1. Physical
2. Verbal
3. Social
4. Cyber
Physical: hitting/kicking/pinching, spitting, tripping/pushing, taking or
breaking someone’s things, making mean or rude hand gestures
This type is usually encountered at school, college or university levels where the kids
and teenagers are targeted by their peers and teachers. This particular type does not
only affect the bully and the victim but also other people who witness it. It may also
cross the line into sexual harassment or physical assault.
When a child is at the stage of developing his or her personality, they encounter bullying
which hinders the overall process. It is most common in the middle school age where
almost all middle age students are affected by it either directly or indirectly. This is an
age where young people want to fit in with their peers, making some students more
likely to bully, while those who don’t fit in stand ore as victims. As not only the victim
but also the bully is affected if they’re not stopped at the right time, the same behavior is
developed and inculcated into the personality of an individual and is carries onto their
college/university and corporate life.
Physical bullying is more likely to occur in males than females, though they are also a
victim of it. The reason for bullying can be as simple as disliking the other person,
wanting more control over the others, jealousy or considering yourself superior over
others on the basis of your appearance, family background, ethnicity etc.
Victims are usually physically weaker than bullies and also maybe socially marginalized
for ethnicity, grades, appearance making it harder for them to fit in. This can have
serious consequences for the victim in terms of self-esteem, mental health, future
parental behavior etc.
The mentioned situations are not considered into bullying unless:
 The same victim is targeted repeatedly
 The bully or bullies intend to hurt, embarrass, or intimidate the victim
 The actions occur in a situation with a real or perceived imbalance of power, such
as when the bully is stronger than the victim or has a higher social standing

Some signs that a child maybe a victim of physical bullying include:

 Coming home from school with bruises, cuts, or other unexplained injuries
 Having damaged clothing, books, or possessions
 Often “losing” things that they take to school
 Complaining of frequently not feeling well before school or school activities
 Skipping certain classes
 Wanting to avoid going to school or going to school a certain way, such as taking
strange routes home from school or not wanting to ride the bus
 Acting sad or depressed
 Withdrawing from others
 Saying they feel picked on
 Displaying low self esteem
 Mood swings, including anger or sadness
 Wanting to run away
 Talking about suicide or violence against others
Examples:
 Pushing someone who is underweight than you in the class
 Hitting someone who refused to act according to what you asked

Verbal: teasing, name calling, insults, inappropriate comments, taunting,

threatening to cause harm, intimidation, homophobic or racist remarks
The following type is interrelated with physical and social bullying and exists on its own
as well. This does not only happen at schools or universities but also at one’s home or in
social gatherings. When people think of bullying, they mostly wander towards the
physical bullying but it goes beyond to verbal bullying and has far worse effects than
physical bullying.
It may seem strange, but verbal bullying can be just as harmful as physical bullying.
With verbal bullying, the goal is still to degrade and demean the victim, while making
the aggressor look dominant and powerful. All bullying focuses on creating a situation in
which the victim is dominated by the aggressor. And this can happen verbally as well as
physically. If we say physical bullying leaves a mark on your body, then verbal bullying
leaves a mark on your soul. The impacts are far worse on the victim’s than a bully can
imagine. It has the power to change the whole perception about one’s self. Sadly, does
not only come from the school but mainly homes in our society focusing on the color,
weight, appearance of an individual, mostly girls. You will also notice that at laces other
than homes and schools, it is usually the woman or girls bullying other girls in a subtle
yet devastating way. This can lead to them isolating themselves from the world around
them and believing on the perception that others have about them.
Examples:
 Aunties in gatherings or at homes telling girls to use remedies to lighten their
skin color in order to get married.
 Mothers telling their daughters to lose weight, otherwise nobody would marry
them.
 Peers calling jabs at others like skinny, fatty, etc.
 Aunties asking girls why do they look like how they are (underweight/overweight,
fat/skinny, dark colored, unusual features)

Social: leaving someone out on purpose, telling others not to befriend with
someone, spreading rumors about someone, embarrassing someone in public,
lying and spreading rumors, damaging someone’s social reputation or
relationships
This type is mostly encountered at homes, schools, friend circles, social gatherings and
corporate sector. By the time you realize it’s bullying, it may feel harder to seek support.
It goes through as process and leaves its reactions and results behind unlike other types.
This does not only affects the victim’s personality but also their relationships and
reputations in front of others. It can occur within the confines of a large social group as
well as within small social networks, close friendships, or romantic relationships.
Relational aggression, indirect aggression, and social aggression are terms used to
describe different dimensions of social bullying. Although the terms convey subtle
differences in meaning, they describe a set of closely related, often overlapping
behaviors that share the effect of undermining social status and threatening feelings of
support, security, and closeness in youth relationships.
The reasons are more or less the same as others types of bullying including jealousy,
considering yourself superior to others, seek attention, impressing others thinking they
are gaining respect, their own insecurities, others are doing it too etc.
Examples:
 Telling other people that they are not wanted in the group
 Telling others negative things about a particular person in order to damage their
reputation

Cyber: posting/sending hurtful texts, emails or posts, images or videos, making

online threats, imitating others online or using their log-in, deliberately excluding
others online, spreading nasty gossip or rumors
As the name suggests, this type is only found online. This seems to be a very little thing,
sitting at one’s home holding your phones and bullying someone, but leaves a huge
impact. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram allow teens to share
pictures, posts and communicate with friends. However, they are also a hotspot for
social media bullying. Other than that, instant messages, text messages and emails can
also be used to do the same.
The content an individual share online, both their personal as well as negative or hurtful
content is viewed by strangers as well as acquaintances. This creates a kind of
permanent public record of their views, activities, and behavior. This public record can
be thought of as an online reputation, which may be accessible to schools, employers,
colleges, and others who may be researching an individual now or in the future.
Cyberbullying can harm the online reputations of everyone involved – not just the
person being bullied, but those doing the bullying or participating in it.
Examples:
 On Instagram, leaving bullying and mean comments on photos including body
shaming or fat shaming comments about a person’s picture
 On Facebook, sending cruel messages back and forth, create groups/pages where
teens gang up on one another
 On Snapchat, known for sending easy-to-delete photos, teens can pass around
inappropriate photos of classmates or hurtful images

Impacts of Bullying
Bullying isn’t good, it has impacted people’s health in many ways. Bullying has become a
serious threat for our youth. According to Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention
(CDC) 20% of high school student gets bullied and cyber bullying affects 16% of high
school student. And most of the time people are affected at the age of 8 to 18 between
schools. Effects which are created by bullying are:
 Social Isolation
 Feeling of shame
 Sleep disturbance
 Changes in eating habits
 Low self-esteem
 School avoidance
 Symptoms of anxiety
 Bedwetting
 Higher risk of illness
 Psychosomatic symptoms
 Symptoms of depression
The problems created by bullying lasts for either short term, long term or may even retain
for permanently. Like social isolation becomes main problem for the victim who gets
bullied, it can last as long as the victim doesn’t face the problem or people are not ready
to become friends or to support the person. The victim prefers to stay alone because he
fears he will be bullied again and has trust issues while making new friends. Furthermore,
most people do not want to be associated with a victim of bullying in order to not look
uncool.

Bulling Short term effect

Bullies harms the victims physically or psychologically these problems could also last for
short term. Like some bullies would hit their victim, victim might get bruised for short
period. And bullies would call names and spread lies which could lead to victim having
problem in maintaining social relationships, could increase truancy risk and person might
also start abusing drugs. Every victim faces low performance in school due to being
bullied.

Bulling Long term effect

During bulling people don’t get this problem could be long lasting or a small joke could
lead to permanent or long-lasting damage. Like hitting a person could last for short
period, but when people start to bully they don’t see places they hit could be long lasting
for the person, like hitting on head or choking or hitting any part of body could lead a long
term effect. Example in California a student was bullied by three students, who attacked
the boy by hitting him in stomach, face and choking the boy. Which later was found that
the boy got permanent brain and spinal damage. And later the boy died.
Bullying lead victims to emerge such problems, which they didn’t had in past. When a
person is bullied get in depression and sick. Due to depression or stress it could trigger
asthma attack on the victim.
If person gets bullied since its childhood could leave a huge impact on future. If a person
is bullied in childhood firstly he would feel scared to go back to school because everyone
would again make fun of him, as time pass his self-confidence and other skills would also
drop and leak to poor grade in future which could affect his future. Even he tells his
teacher or parents that he is getting bullied and they do nothing he may lose confidence
from trusting them in future. And the joke or lies which are spread person can stress a lot
people even starts to believe that they are true stories which affect their personal life or
future life. Even people around him would try to stay further for him because the lies
which have been spread. After bullying even has hard time maintain a social life which he
wanted and is forced to remain alone. Even the teacher’s starts to judge the person by the
lies or society which even tries to force the person to leave the area. Even in future victim
confidence so lost and weak it becomes hard for the victim to find a good job or become
jobless because the skills and confidence which he lost when got bullied. Even in the job
people are bullied by forcing to work for them or spreading lies or threating their family.
Even a person gets a job and if lie is spread or old rumour has emerge the person gets in
stress and doesn’t has place to hide it could still effect his adult life. Even they are bullies
who even tells victim children or family to tease the person gradually the person becomes
sick.
Due to bullying a person becomes homeless, sick and the word, the scene keeps hunting
the person for rest of his life.
Suicide rate are increasing day by day. Specially people who are in stress or emotional
broken from inside. Victims who are bullied, if they see that no id here to help them, or
their life was ruin by a certain person and cannot find a place to escape, then victim starts
to think that there is only one place to go is kill himself.
Ty Smalley 1994 – 2010 age 11 he was bullied a lot for his height and bullies used to push
him around and called him name, one day bullies surrounded him start to beat him, so a
teacher caught the Ty Smalley also and took both the victim and the bully to principle,
without any proof Ty Smalley was expelled from school for three days. Ty Smalley wasn’t
able to bare the stress and at home he went took his father pistol and shot himself.
Even sometimes the victim snaps whenever losses everything, meaning when his mind
snaps. Victims gets so stressed sometimes he thinks the only way to get out of the problem
is to kill the person who did this to him. By killing the bully.

Anti-Bullying Campaign
Anti-bullying campaign is to prevent bullying in society which is a common problem now
days. It also helps to create awareness about bullying and how to deal with it. Many people
get bullied but they don’t know how to handle it and whom to address. There are many
campaigns around the world which are helping to prevent bullying in organizations,
schools and their daily lives. In France, No to bullying day is a campaign of anti-bullying
which was brought into practice after it was estimated that 7 lac peoples in France are
bullied each year. Similarly, in U.K Anti-bullying week was a campaign to prevent
bullying. In Egypt, first national anti-bullying campaign was launched with the
cooperation of UNICEF and the funding of the European Union. The campaign
encourages young people around the country to share their experiences and to suggest
ways to stand up against bullying. Several celebrities also take part in these campaigns to
show support towards the people who are being bullied. It also happens in Germany with
the name of safer internet day and in Brazil multi-national company like Coca-Cola was
also linked to a discriminatory term against the LGBT community.

Executive Summary:
Our anti-bullying campaign is divided into two broad categories, the physical activities
and the online campaigns. These will be funded by the sponsors like CakeUp, Surf Excel,
Brite etc.
Physical Activities:
These include the seminars and workshops to be held in schools and corporate sector.
For schools, we have planned anti- bullying week for students, all together against
bullying award, safe school and community team, bullying ambassadors amongst
students only who will be promoting the cause and can approached by the students for
such matters. An anti-bullying survey is to be taken from students where they will be
sharing their stories anonymously which will be followed by a workshop for parents and
teachers. This is to make them understand the things from the students’ perspectives
and help them get out of it accordingly. A separate seminar is to be arranged for the
principle and staff to educate them how to handle bullies and their victims.
Workshops and Seminars are planned to be arranged in the corporate sector
separately for managers and employees. The purpose is to educate managers the impact
of such bullying instances on the motivation as well as profitability of the organization
and how to handle such cases. Moreover, the employees also need to be made aware of
what is happening around them, as we discussed that social bullying is a whole process
which leaves its impact in bits and pieces. Hence, it is significant that the employees are
provided with awareness as well as confidence and support to speak up and stand for
themselves in such matters.
Online Campaigns:
These will include testimonials from celebrities and influencers encouraging people to
speak up and take a stand for themselves. This will further be supported by the threads
where people will be encouraged to share their stories in order to create awareness for
others going through the same but at a different stage.
Keeping the exposure of our target audience in mind, we have further planned to
produce web-series on Youtube. This will showcase the types of bullying and its impacts
so that our message is spread across making sure to retain the interest of the people who
are watching it.
Our Objective:
Our objective with this campaign is to spread awareness of the lasting impact that
bullying can have on an individual. Furthermore, we want people to understand how
important it is to raise their voice and help those who are being bullied.
Target Audience:
As bullying is most common in schools and other educational institutes, we believe that
our primary target audience must be the parents, staff and faculty of these organizations
and the students. Furthermore, we will target corporate businesses and office-goers who
are bullied in the corporate world. We want to extend and also spread awareness of the
bullying that is common in every household in Pakistan.
SWOT Analysis:
In order to have a better understanding of the campaign that we want to conduct, we
believe that it is mandatory to do the SWOT analysis in order to properly assess the
aspects of our campaign.
Strengths:
 Different variety of mediums available to convey our message.
 Through social media we can get in touch with our audience and receive
immediate feedback.
 The team working towards achieving this goal is very passionate about the cause,
hence will put in all their efforts to encounter the problem and raise awareness
for the cause.
Weaknesses:
 The team lacks experience and social media followers.
 It is difficult to influence the people at first
 Most people lack knowledge of what bullying actually is and the long term
impacts it leaves on the personality.
 Victims of bullying often do not want to open up and share their side of the story
in fear of being seen as weak.
 A bully is always in denial hence it requires more than just pointing out their
mistake.
Threats:
 Most often the parents of the bullies do not want to accept that their child is a
bully and find excuses to somehow blame the organization or the other party
involved.
 Bullying is usually overlooked as people do not understand how serious this issue
can be.
 Mostly children are unaware of their rights, hence they choose to keep quiet.
Opportunities:
 Train parents, faculty and students about what they must do to encounter
situations of such nature.
 Use mediums such as TV, conferences, and public events to spread awareness.
 Collaborate with youtubers to spread the message as the youth usually watches
them and sees them as their idol.
 Create a short story film which will have entertaining plot and a message to raise
voice against bullies at the end.

Action Plan
Our main target is to portray bullying as uncool. We have divided our target audience in
two very major categories; the education institutions and the corporate businesses. For
the two we have different action plans. Let us first discuss the action plan that we intend
to execute in the corporate world.
In the corporate world we intend to raise awareness by providing workshops and
seminars to the managers in order to understand how to identify if any employee is
being bullied, how to properly communicate their rights to them and make whistle
blowing a common practice that employee shouldn’t be scared of doing. Furthermore,
we will carry out surveys in companies to have a better grip of what the employees
understanding of bullying is. The surveys will have open-ended questions to get enough
feedback to get as close to the problem as we can get, so that we can come up with
policies that will ensure a safe and bully-free environment.
In schools and other educational institutions, we intend to carry out the following
activities:
 Anti-Bullying Week:
During this week, we will have a ton of activities that will help students get along,
we will have art sessions through which we will encourage students to portray
what it feels like to be bullied using art. We will have the students put up positive
comments for their fellow students and teachers and encourage a positive and
safe environment. During this week, we will have guest speakers that the students
can most relate to, come in and share their experiences with bullying and how
they encountered it.
 All-Together Against Bullying Award:
We will make a union of schools, that will sign a petition to create policies for
students, staff and faculty members that will enforce a safe environment, free of
bullying. Furthermore, we understand that awards and rewards increase
motivation to work for a cause hence, we will have an All-Together Against
Bullying Award that will be handed over to a school that proves it did most out of
all schools to encounter bullying.
 Safe School and Community Teams:
We will encourage the board of different schools to form Safe School and
Community teams that will train faculty members, staff and parents on how to
identify as well as help students encounter bullying.
 Surveys anonymous
Most victims do not like to accept it in public that they are being bullied, hence
we will conduct surveys anonymously. These surveys will help us craft policies
that will help the anti-bullying cause.
 Record Testimonials:
We will record testimonials of the students and with their permission, show them
in workshops to parents and faculty members, so that they learn how to identify if
a child is being bullied.
 Anti-Bullying Forum
This Forum will be created to report any incident and make public the
consequences of it that the bully had to go through in order to reinforce good
behavior. The forum will be open for every parent of the student to check.
 Social media awareness:
On social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, we will have
celebrities write in favor of anti-bullying. This will encourage their followers to
have a healthy discussion on it and spread awareness.
 Web series on YouTube:
With the help of our sponsors, we will create a webseries on YouTube as most of
our target audience watches YouTube. This series will show a life of a student and
an office-goers go through bullying, their struggles and how they in the end
encounter it. Furthermore, it will help people understand the seriousness of this
issue.
Funding:
For the initial campaigns that we intend to run on social media platforms, we do not
need any funding as our group member Avina Munawar is capable of working on adobe
photoshop to make posters and we will use our connections in media to get posted them
on Twitter and Instagram. For workshops and seminars, we will charge the institutions,
and for events that we plan on doing, we will have sponsors pitch in money. Sponsors
like surf excel, dalda banaspati, good goodies are always looking to raise voices for social
causes and showing all their CSR activities that they are indulged in to the consumer,
hence they will be interested in working with us.

Pros of Anti-bullying campaign:

 Firstly, it will bring attention to the bullying problem and try to resolve the issue.
 It will make people aware of the feelings of those being bullied which will help
people to actively contribute to the prevention of bullying.
 It will develop an environment where people and their children feel safe.
 It will also tell clear routes and processes for reporting a bullying incident.
 It will help people to come out of trauma or depression which are affecting him
after getting bullied.
 It will help people to work positively without fear of getting bullied.
 It will help the country from crimes like domestic violence and harassment which
are happening by those who have got bullied.
 It makes the people strong enough to stop someone if he is trying to bully someone
else.

Cons of Anti-bullying campaign:

 It does not address the issue of bullying properly which might become reason of
people not taking it seriously.
 Most of the times it hurts the person more who has got bullied because of
addressing the bullying.
 It does not make concerned authorities to take strict actions against those who are
bullying.
 If someone doesn’t have anonymous reporting of bullying, retribution can be
sought by those accused.
 It does not affect those who are bullying and sometimes it can become the cause of
bullying more.
Conclusion
It is imperative that we aware the society about the seriousness of bullying and the
impacts it leaves on the personality of the victims as well as the bullies. Furthermore, we
understand that these steps may or may not work but we need to start somewhere. It
takes decades to change the mindset of a society but we believe that this is the start that
we all need to encounter this problem of our society.
