THIRD INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

YEAR & SEMESTER: 4TH YEAR & 7TH SEMESTER
SUBJECT CODE& NAME: PC6701 Process Equipment Design and Drawing -2
DATE: MARKS: 100
TIME: DURATION: 3 HRS
PART A-(10×2=20)
Answer ALL questions.
1. Define bubble point and dew points.
2. Write the importance of VLE?
3. Why extremely large or small volume of fluids is best routed through the shell and tube heat
exchangers?
4. What are the advantages of square pitch arrangement over the triangular pitch in case of heat
exchanger tubes?
5. State Duhring’s rule.
6. How the economy and capacity of evaporator is calculated?
7. Define weeping in column.
8. Write the equation to calculate Murphree efficiency of a plate in the distillation column.
9. List out the three components which comprises total head developed in a pump.
10. Differentiate between a fan and a compressor?

PART B-(5×13=65)
11.A) Explain in detail about the thermodynamic properties of gases and binary mixture.

(OR)
B) A column is to be designed to separate a mixture of ethylbenzene and styrene. The feed will
contain 0.5 mole fraction styrene, and a styrene purity of 99.5 percent is required, with a
recovery of 85 percent. Estimate the number of equilibrium stages require data reflux ratio of
8. Maximum column bottom pressure 0.20 bar.
12. A) Water enters the tube of a small single pass heat exchanger at 20ºC and leaves at 40ºC. On
the 25 kg/min of steam temperature of 60ºC. (1)Calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient
and the required flowrate of water if the area of the exchanger is 12 m2. (The latent heat hfg is
2358.7 KJ/kg at 60ºC) (2) Consider the following parallel floe heat exchanger specifications,
Cold water enters at 40ºC; Cc=20000 W/K
Hot water enters at 150ºC; Ch=10000 W/K
A= 30 m2 U=500 W/m2 K. Determine the heat transfer and the exit temperatures.
(OR)
B) Design a horizontal condenser 1-2 condenser required for the condensation of 60000 lb/hr of
substantially pure n-propanol coming from top of the distillation column operating at 15 psig, at which
the pressure it boils at 244ºF water at 85ºF will be used as the cooling medium. A dirt factor of 0.003 is
required for allowable pressure drop of 2.0 psig for vapour and 10 psig for water. Because of the location
of the condenser; assume that 8 inch tubes are used. Tubes are to be ¾ inch of OD 16BWG on 15/16
inch triangular pitch.

13. A) 5 kg/sec of an aqueous solution containing 12% is to be concentrated to 40% by weight. The
feed solution enters at 25ºC enters the last effect of a backward feed arrangement triple effect
evaporator. Pressure of the heating steam is 4 Kg/cm2 and corresponding temperature is 143ºC. vacuum
in the last effect is 2 Kg/cm2 which corresponding to the boiling temperature of 60ºC. overall heat
transfer coefficient in individual units are as follows; u1=1800 W/m2 K u3=600 W/m2K, heat capacity
of the liquor may be assumed to be constant 3700 J/KgK. Latent heat of vapour=2357 KJ/Kg, latent
heat of vapour 2357KJ/Kg. Design the evaporator.

(OR)

B) A 5%aqueous solution of a high molecular weight solute has to be concentrated to 40% in a forward
feed double effect evaporator at the rate of 8000 kg/h. the feed temperature is 40ºC. Saturated steam at
3.5 kg/cm2 is available for heating. A vacuum of 600 mm Hg is maintained in the second effect.
Calculate the area requirements, if calendria of equal area are used. The overall heat transfer coefficients
are 550 and 370 kcal/ h m ºC in the first and last effect respectively. The specific heat of the concentrated
liquor is 0.87kcal/kgºC.

14. A) Acetic acid is to be separated from a process steam containing 80% acetic acid and 20% water
(by mass) by continuous distillation column at atmospheric pressure. Concentration of water in the
bottom product (pure acetic acid) should not be greater than 50 ppm. Top product (distillate) contains
80% water and 20 % acetic acid (by mass). The feed is liquid at 30ºC. estimate the number of theoretical
stages required both graphically and empirically. Vapour liquid equilibria data are as follows
