PR2 Topic Rationale

The document provides rationales for 5 potential research topics on practical research from a senior high school. The second topic proposes investigating the use of Lansium domesticum peel extract as an insect repellent to prevent infestation of head lice. It notes that head lice infestation is common in Filipino children and that Lansium domesticum peel contains compounds that repel insects. The study would test the toxicity of the peel extract on head lice. The fifth topic proposes using sugarcane molasses as a natural fertilizer for rice to boost productivity in a sustainable way while reducing agricultural waste. It aims to determine if molasses is an effective fertilizer for rice and can maintain soil quality in hybrid

Practical Research 2
Topic Rationale

Instructions: Each member of the group should think of a viable working title. Provide a rationale for the study narrating the significance and
feasibility. Provide the alignment of the study based on ASEAN sustainable development goals. Provide reliable references for each of the
proposed topics in APA format.

1. Working Title:

2. Working Title: The use of Lansium domesticum peel extract as an insect repellent to prevent infestation of
Pediculus capitis
Rationale:
Pediculus capitis or head lice infestation, is prevalent among Filipino children and it is considered as the
second most frequent problem following tooth decay. According to Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the
Philippines, the rate of Pediculus capitis in children reached 59.7%, which shows 108 out of 181 students has
head lice in Makati City where the research was conducted. Lansium Domesticum, also known as Langsat or as
“Lanzones”, is a tropical fruit that originates from the Western Peninsular of Malysia and is usually found in other
Southeast Asian countries. Previous studies on Lansium domesticum shows that its peelings contain five
onoceroid triterpenes, lansiosides, and lansic acid. The five onoceriod triterpenes that it contains are determined
to exude a white sap and when the peelings are dried and burned, the aromatic smell that it will produce repels
insects such as mosquitoes. The similarities of lice and mosquitoes are both are insects which can transmit
diseases and derives their nutrition from the host by sucking blood and the aim of this research is to seek answer
for the following questions:
1. Can Lansium Domesticum peelings extract also repel other insects such as Pediculus capitis?
2. What is the effectivity of Lansium domesticum peel extract as a repellent to prevent re-infestation of
Pediculus capitis?

The type of research method to be used in this research is the experimental method, a collection of head
louse will be tested through in vitro tests. Tests to be conducted will evaluate the toxicity and mortality of the
Lansium domesticum peel extract to Pediculus capitis; the mortality of it on the filter paper that will be used will
be recorded under dissecting microscope.

Alignment: This study is aligned to the “Good health and well-being” goal on the ASEAN sustainable
development goals.

Rationale:

Agriculture is one of the main source of income for Filipino farmers and manufacturers. The Philippines is an
agricultural country and known to be one of the world’s biggest consumer of rice. Molasses is a thick brown syrup that
serves as a by-product of sugarcane milling process. It is usually sent out as waste to factories. The study aims to address
the decreasing rate of rice production in the country by using sustainable sugarcane molasses without the need to create
chemically damaging fertilizers. Rice and sugarcane are two of the major agricultural crops in the country.
Unfortunately, the high productivity rate of rice production in Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam led to the continuous
decrease in the country’s export. The objective of the research is to provide valuable nutrients like nitrogen, phosphate
and potash for the growth of Oryza sativa and to lessen the waste products by using Saccarum officinarum linn as
natural and efficient fertilizer. At the same time, the study aims to improve hybrid farming by offering fertilizers that
can maintain soil quality without causing any harm to the crops.

 Research aims to answer the following:

1. Is the Saccharum offinarum linn an effective fertilizer for Oryza Sativa?
2. Can Saccharum offinarum linn be used in hybrid farming while still maintain the soil quality in rice
plantations?
To do this, the four types of molasses was mixed with surface water and was placed in three commonly used soils
in rice plantations in the Philippines. The experiment used Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) finger-printing and Duncan’s
multiple range test to analyze the differences in each rice fragment and to determine the improvement of the genetic
composition and production performance using the sugarcane molasses. The experiment would last for three to six
months which is the average time for rice to grow. This innovation and research would contribute in facilitating the
transformation of the Philippine agricultural industry in boosting productivity, efficiency, and sustainability all in one
by lessening waste, reducing expenses, and improving the quality of crops in the country.

Alignment: This study is aligned with “Climate Action” and “Life on Land” goal on the ASEAN sustainable development
goals.
