GROUP DISCUSSIONS
Group discussion is a systematic and purposeful interactive oral process in
which there is exchange of information, views, and opinions about a topic,
issue, problem or situation.
We involve in a discussion in order to develop a better perspective on key
issues by bringing out various view points. When we exchange differing views
on an issue, we get a clear picture of the problem and an enhanced
understanding that makes us better equipped to deal with the problem.
The ability to take effective part in group discussions is one of the most
important skills that contribute to professional success. Group discussions aid
in problem solving, decision making, and personality assessment.
Characteristics of Successful Group Discussions:
- Agreement on group goals
- Goal-oriented interaction
- Agreement on procedures
- Cooperative and friendly atmosphere
- Use of effective communication techniques
- Equitable distribution of participation
- Shared leadership
Group discussion has emerged as an effective and potentially powerful
technique for evaluating personality traits of candidates for job selection or
admission to professional courses. There are four major areas of evaluation in
selection GDs: subject knowledge, oral communication skills, leadership skills
and team management.
1. Subject knowledge – thorough understanding of the topic and the ability to
analyze facts or information in a systematic way to correlate them with
personal experiences and exposure.
2. Oral communication skills - the ability to present that knowledge in an
effective way. Include listening skills, appropriateness of language, clarity of
expression, positive speech attitudes, clear articulation and non-verbal clues.
3. Leadership skills – include initiative, analysis, assertiveness, self-confidence,
objectivity, patience and composure, persuasiveness and motivation
4. Team management skills – include adaptability, positive attitude,
cooperation, coordination
Group Discussion Strategies:
1. In the absence of a designated leader, someone in the group must take an
assertive position to initiate the GD.
2. Each member of the group must contribute systematically.
3. Each member must try to create a friendly and cooperative atmosphere.
4. The leader should ensure that the GD moves along the right direction so that
it is completed in the given time.
5. Optimal participation should be promoted by the leader and other
members.
6. Leader should know how to handle conflict.
7. The leader must also ensure effective closure to the GD after reminding the
group of its goal and requesting them to reach a consensus.
It is not important that every GD ends with a consensus but every GD must end
with some positive conclusion. The leader must emphasise the points of
agreement in order to indicate a common viewpoint regarding the topic.
