D. Abstraction
Conflict in a narrative is created when the main character wants
something. When a something else gets in the protagonist’s way, a
conflict arises. These discrepancies depend on the individual
narrative circumstances. Without conflict, there is no plot.

Types of Conflict:
1. Man vs. Self – a type of conflict which is internal; it takes place
within the mind of the main character and often involves the
character making a decision between right and wrong, or other
mixed emotions. However, this struggle could also exist in the
form of a character battling mental illness.
EXAMPLE:
- Having low self-esteem, Anna is worried because she might
fail the subject and she may not be able to move to the 11 th
grade.
- My father is feeling sad because of his low salary. He is
finding some ways to sustain the needs of our family.

2. Man vs. Man – most common form of external conflict or also

known as interpersonal conflict; it lies at the heart of all dramatic
arts and places the struggle directly between the protagonist
and antagonist. In this type of conflict, the protagonist wants
something, and the antagonist obstructs the protagonist from
getting what he wants.
EXAMPLE:
- Senator Trillanes is against President Duterte.
- The fight between Amor Powers and Claudia Buenavista.

3. Man vs. Society – also an external conflict; it takes place when

the protagonist is placed at odds with the government or cultural
tradition. This conflict applies to the societal norms as well.
EXAMPLE:
- The story of Romeo and Juliet
- Cardo Dalisay was chased by the Pulang Araw, the corrupt
government officials and some other drug lords.

4. Man vs. Nature – a type of conflict where it pits the main

character against the forces of nature – in the form of natural
disaster or a similarly dangerous situation – and is often
associated with literary naturalism, which hinges on the idea
that nature is indifferent to humanity.
EXAMPLE:
- The movie entitled “2012” where the main character is trying
to save his family against the natural disaster that occurred
in the movie.
- Mia’s house was ruined due to the tornado that passed at
their village.

scenario it belongs. Each group must raise their boards after the count of

point.
