STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Mathematics is one of those little things that have given me pleasure since
childhood. I am not exactly sure when the love for mathematics evolved, maybe
as soon as I started studying. I have always been active in participating
Mathematics quizzes and Olympiads. Studying mathematics was very joyful; I
just enjoyed searching for different ways of solving problems. Getting marks has
never been my priority while learning and understanding has.
I entered the real world when I took admission in Bachelor of Science in
Mathematics at the University of Delhi. It was fascinating to see how little things
also needed to be proved. I was amazed when one of my professors asked me to
prove 1+0=1, I just wondered how that was even possible to prove such basic
things. I liked every aspect of it but the thing I relished most was Analysis, the
way I could visualize things happening was astonishing. In a group I also prepared
a project called “Linear Programming in real life” which was not actually a part
of my curriculum, we prepared well enough to get to University level. This whole
experience was undoubtedly amazing. Once my Professor told me that
Mathematics we study in school, here gets divided into subcategories like
Analysis, Algebra etc. and if we go further into it, these subcategories merge
together to give birth to real mathematics. That was the beauty of mathematics I
was introduced at that time; this whole idea caught my mind in such a way that I
decided to go beyond in this direction. In graduation, I performed well getting
total 2647 marks in all semesters out of 3000 giving 88.32 %.
Then I applied for a national level exam called JAM (Joint Admission test for
Masters) to do Master of Science in Mathematics from India’s most precious
institutes i.e. IITs where I got All India Rank 103 out of 10000 students that gave
the exam. Eventually, I got admission in IIT Roorkee where things became even
more challenging, but it was more enjoyable than before. Professors there were
supportive and much leaned towards research-oriented learning. I got to learn
even more interesting subjects starting from Topology, the study of open sets in
a broader way, a more general concept than Metric spaces. Sometimes I used to
think about the existence of even more general theory i.e. something that will
contain Topological as well as Non-Topological Spaces. I studied Real and
Complex Analysis thoroughly and learned a lot of things than Bachelors. Measure
Theory was also very captivating, and I later came to know why the whole
concept of the measure was important, to give rise to integration theory, leading
to Probability Theory, Stochastic Processes. But I found Functional Analysis very
intriguing and was enthralled to see how perfectly a Vector Space can be given a
Topological structure through a norm and an inner product giving rise to Banach
Spaces and Hilbert Spaces. I was enthralled to see the importance of four basic
theorems (Hahn Banach theorem, Uniform Boundedness Principle, Open
mapping theorem and Closed graph theorem) or we can say pillars of Functional
Analysis as they are used quite a lot in different branches of Functional analysis.
I did two minor projects (explained briefly in CV) namely “The Rubik’s group”
and “Orthogonal polynomials and three-term recurrence”. I have always seen
myself as a strong learner and a very good explainer of the things, even my
classmates like the way I explain things to them. Till now I have scored
reasonably well in the class getting 8.53/10.0 CGPA where marking system is
relative. I am working under the guidance of Dr A. Swaminathan, for my master's
thesis project (abstract given in CV) in Functional Analysis “ C* Algebras:
Applications in Spectral theory and Mechanics” to be precise and will be
continuing in this direction for my PhD.
Germany is one of the better places for research purposes. It has the top-most
institutes in Europe with an amazing research environment and BIGS is just one
of them with intriguing current research areas in almost every branch of
mathematics makes it my first choice for doing a PhD. It will act as a stepping
stone in achieving my ultimate dream of becoming a professor and spreading the
beauty of mathematics around the globe.
I totally believe that these educational values which I possess, pursuing a PhD
will add more to it and expose me more to areas where Mathematics knowledge
are relevant. I have enclosed the application form, my CV, certificates, and
transcripts. I am looking forward to your hearing soon. Thank you very much for
your consideration.
