Being an Environmental Superhero: What Can You Do?
By: Rosalynn Wong
Many people lament about the state of our Mother Earth. Extinction here, deforestation there,
pollution everywhere. And yet, when asked about what they are doing to help Mother Nature, many just
shrug their shoulders and say, “I’m only one person. What can I do?” Here is where they have
underestimated themselves, my dear readers. All of us have the responsibility and more importantly, the
ability to make a difference. If we will only make some changes to our everyday lifestyles, we can save the
environment.
First of all, we can start with the things we use at home. Instead of thoughtlessly discarding
everything we do not want as trash, we should try to reduce, reuse or recycle anything we can. For
instance, the other side of used papers can be utilised as rough paper or for scribbling down telephone
messages. In addition to that, we could also reuse plastic bags for carrying groceries, especially during “No-
Plastic-Bag Saturdays”.
Besides that, we can also try to lower our energy and water consumption at home. By doing so, we
will reduce the burden on our natural resources such as coal, petroleum and so on. For example, try
increasing the temperature setting on the air-conditioners at home because that translates into lower energy
consumption. Furthermore, not only can we save on resources, we should use those “free” ones wisely.
Rain water can be a great substitute for tap water when it comes to watering the garden or washing our
house compound.
Last but not least, we should be more environmentally-friendly in our transportation choices. We
are so accustomed to jumping into our own cars and zooming off to wherever we want to on a whim. What
if we planned our journeys a little better and opt for more earth-friendly ways to travel? Cars guzzle up
petroleum, a resource that is depleting quickly. Take a walk or cycle to nearby destinations. Those are not
only environmentally-conscious actions; they keep you healthy and fit too. Alternatively, take public
transport for longer distances.
As you can see, we are not helpless or ineffectual when it comes to caring for the environment. In
fact, just one person’s daily actions can have a great impact on the world we live in. Remember that it is
our responsibility to create a better world for our future generations. As the saying goes, “Our children do
not inherit the earth from us, it is us who borrow it from them.” Therefore, if we all play our parts, we
can guarantee a better tomorrow for planet earth.
