CHAPTER I
Background of the Study
This study is all about the perceptions of Grade 12 Senior High School
(Accountancy, Business and Management, Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences, General Academic Strand, General
Academic Criminology Strand) students on courtship.
Courting is the common way of a man trying to (or succeeding to) express his
feeling towards a woman. It was practiced before, through “harana” but as time passes
by; it has evolved and now done by men in different ways. When it comes to courtship,
attraction and curiosity is the point where it starts. “Getting attracted towards member of
opposite sex meaning noticing and paying extra attention to physical attributes with
pleasure and spontaneity.” (Jessica Siebenbruner) “Before a girl and a boy enter a
relationship, the girl needs to open herself to the boy at first to be able to know if the boy
is serious or not. Treating a woman well requires a combination of courtesy and common
acts of love.” (Linda J. Pegalis)
Perspective of Courtship in School is one of the most common problems
encountered by many students. The different problems and trials they encounter are the
following: time management, the ability to cope up with others, school and family
problems and most especially the pressure of courting a woman and making them say
yes.

The ideal situation of courtship should not be pressured and it should be focused
on studying before engaging in a relationship to become a useful asset of society. With
the scenario mentioned above and previous situations, it is the main objective of the
researchers to learn the different perceptions of the students about Romantic Courtship by
Grade 12 Senior High School Students. Therefore, the research findings on that objective
become the source of an intervention program for school effectiveness.
Statement of the Problem
Specifically, this study attempted to answer the following objectives:
1. What are the profiles of the respondents such as sex and strand?
2. What are the insights of Grade 12 Senior High School Students of Northwestern
Visayan Colleges about Courtship?

Significance of the Study
The results of this study are beneficial to the following students, parents and
future researchers.
Students. This study’s findings are valuable to the students for they enlighten them to the
essence of courtship. This study is a guide for the students in terms of the courtship habit.
Parents. The results may serve as guide for parents to supervise their children in order to
avoid wrongdoings.
Future Researchers. This will be a source of another problem on study or can be
replicated using additional variables in another locale or setting, with different
respondents. The results will be a possible research literature for their own study.
Enrichment or validation of the study of the same variable is recommended for them to
be able to reinforce the results of this study. The findings of this study can also be a
conceptual framework for their own study.
Definition of Terms
For the clarity of interpretation, the following terms were defined conceptually and
operationally:
