Facilitating Learning 1 - Narrative Report

1. The children had varying accuracy in predicting how many words they could remember from a list, ranging from 5-10 words remembered out of 10 words given. Their actual recall varied from 5-8 words remembered. 2. The children were generally able to retell stories in the correct sequence, with no major differences by age. 3. The older children indicated schools do not focus as much on developing memory strategies or reading appreciation as they move to higher grades, though some teachers are more helpful in these areas than others.

( A Narrative Report )

Interview always start with consent given by the interviewee and the guardian of the
interviewee, this is to respect the right and the privacy of both the interviewee and the guardian.
Preparation of the materials for the interview is a must so the interview will go smoothly:
preparing the ten words and the story. I make an appointment with the guardian because the
classes had begun and every student, especially children are in school, checking their availability
and schedule is recommended. When interviewing, I always start with greetings, to teach
children to be polite and courteous, and also to show respect to the parents and guardian, and
always end the interview by saying thank you to the child and also to the parent, to show how
grateful I am to be able to get a little of their time and to be included with their schedule.

For the age 4-6;

I interviewed Christian D. , aged 5, a resident of Escalante City, Negros Occidental. He

said that, in order to remember, he needs to read it by himself or I will read it again and guessed
that he will get 6 words out of 10. He said that he is not good at remembering words but he is
good at math. He loves watching television and eating. He likes to just sit all day and eat all day.
He is always curious about everything which is good and also bad, it depends on where that
curiosity takes or lead him. Out of the ten words I’ve said, he only remembers 5 words because
he said that’s the only words that comes to his mind: drum, burger, sunny helicopter, and piano.
He doesn’t know how he remembered it. I read him “ The Dog and The Shadow” by Aesop. I
translated the story to the child’s mother tongue for he may or may not understand what the story
means and may or may not retell the story because he will not understand. And because of that,
he retell the story correctly because he understands it and it’s an interesting story.

For the age 7-9;

I interviewed Deanne Klyde S. Delos Santos, aged 8, a resident of Brgy. Bato, Sagay City
and a student of Abounding Life Christian Academy (ALCA). She said that in order to remember
the words, she will listen very intently, she will ask the teacher to read it again, since she’s not
very good at reading, yet. She guessed that she will get it all right since she’s very good at
listening. She even joined the declamation contest in their school, but sadly, she can’t perform it
on stage because of stage fright. She said that she was not prepared of the amount of people who
she can see from stage. The teachers just tell them to read and listen very carefully so they can
remember it. She learned things best when she sees and hears it. Reading activity is one the
source of their learning. Out of the 10 words I said and asked her to remember, she remembered
most of it, 8 out 10: starfish, helicopter, sleeping, bicycle ,panda, burger, piano and drum, she
missed sunny and polite.

I read to her the story of “ The Lion and The Mouse” by Aesop. She likes to read if she
can’t read well. If she can read well and be taught to read well it would be very helpful for her
since she likes to read. They read stories at school like fairy tales and other reading books.
Sometimes they’re given the chance to pick what they will read at school. She read outside the
school, she reads story books or stories in the internet, but sometimes, she doesn’t read book
because she was distracted with her gadget and will play plants vs. zombies or any gaming
application. She thinks the reading is important because it will help her understand better and do
better at school. Asking the teacher is what she will do if she doesn’t understand a word. She
retold the story the ways I retell it and even tell her mother about it.

And lastly, the 10 years old or above;

I interviewed Karylle D. Macriola, aged 10, a resident of Brgy. Bato, Sagay City and a
student of Central Bato Elementary School. She said that in order to remember the words, she
will read it by herself by writing it down, because she is not sure if they will have a quiz. She
guessed that she will problem get 5 more or less out of 10 words because she said that she is not
really good at remembering when she heard it once. The teachers just tell them to take down
notes so they can study it and to listen very intently. She learned things best when she sees and
hears it. They are more on listening since they are on a higher grade/level now. Out of the 10
words I said and asked her to remember, she remembered most of it, 5 out 10: vampire, volcanic
eruption, flood, helicopter and basket.

I read to her the story of “The Dove and the Ant” by Aesop. She’s not fond of reading
because she’s an outgoing person. She prefer playing volleyball in her free time, and also going
to places with her friends. She can read and if they’re taught better in reading, it will excel her
reading skills and she can broaden her vocabulary and understanding. They don’t read stories at
school except what is written on textbooks. She thinks the reading is important because it will
help her understand better and do better at school even if she doesn’t like reading. The one who
asks more knows more than who doesn’t ask, if she doesn’t understand what they read, she will
ask the teacher, or look it up online when she got home. She retold the story exactly the way I
said it and doesn’t even notice it was not in order.
Reflection

1. How accurate were the children in predicting how well they would remember the word
list? How well did they remember the list? Were they able to tell you what they did to
remember the words after repeating the list? Were there any differences in age in terms of
how accurate their predictions or their lists were?
 Accuracy of children predictions varies in their age, the six year old and ten year
old said that they can remember 5 words more or less out of 10 from the word list,
while the seven year old child said that she can remember 10 out of 10 from the
word list but failed to remember the 2 words ( for the 8 years old child) and 5
words for the ( 5 year old and 10 year old child). They just remember it by
remembering what is familiar, easy to picture out and also of what they have
understand. The accuracy of prediction of the list differs in terms of age because
of their willingness to read and memorize, their competitiveness, and also what
the school taught them.
2. How well did the children do in retelling the story? Did the children tend to tell the story
in the “correct” order or in the order to tell it? Were there age differences in how they
responded here?
 They did well in retelling the story, not the exact words tho, but the exact
sequence and how is it placed according to how I told them. It’s easy to memorize
a story than memorizing words because in the remembering stories, you just need
to understand the plot of the story. There is no age differences on how they
responded on the story telling. They must have love the story.
3. Consider the older children’s responses to the questions about memory and reading.
Given their responses, how well do schools seem to support children developing
metacognitive strategies for memory and reading? Did the children have a sense of which
way they learn best? Do they seem to think that teachers help them with this? How
effective do schools seem to be in creating/supporting an appreciation of reading in
children? Do the children seem to see teachers being helpful in these areas?
 Oldest child I’ve interviewed was a ten year old student and she said that they’re
not taught about memorizing and they’re no longer thought of reading because
they’re already on grade 5 and they’re not focusing now with reading. It seems
like they’re doing a little bit on reading and memory except for what they’re
focusing now. They don’t teach children how to remember words easier. The
children have their own ways of learning the best way like listening intently.
Supporting an appreciation of reading varies with ages and grades/level they’re in,
like the 8 year old child/student, they’re focusing on teaching them how to read,
and also how to listen, and she always tell what she have learned, and the story
she heard, she will tell it to her mother, the exact same order. Some teachers are
helpful in these areas, and some are not, it always depends on the teachers way of
teaching.
