Course Description:
The course gives students an opportunity to practice and improve their writing skills in English
as well as their writing and reading skills in general. The course focuses on absorbing and
producing academic language for practical use to be able to freely participate in graduate studies
at university and as well as to prepare for future academic career
Objectives:
By the end of the course the students are able to demonstrate their familiarity with the concept in
academic writing, . The course focuses on improving the students’ skills in the following fields:
a. basic concept of academic writing; academic texts of different genres in English
b. general academic English vocabulary
c. referencing techniques in writing: quoting, summarizing, paraphrasing
d. coherence and cohesion: transitions, linking words
e. research paper structure
f. logical structure and flow
g. main features and functions of abstracts, key features of the academic research paper
h. understanding the stages of the writing process
i. What is plagiarism
Activities
Activities throughout the course include brief lectures, pair work, presentation and free writing of
assigned topics. To maximize the learning activities, students are grouped for the presentation.
Each group is responsible for making reviews and summaries.
Evaluation:
20% Class participation (includes presentation)
20% Classroom free writing
30% Midterm and quizess
30% Final Paper
